(AP) ? The world's first commercial supply ship is closed up and ready for a Thursday flight back to Earth from the International Space Station.

Astronauts sealed the hatch to the SpaceX Dragon capsule on Wednesday. It's loaded with 1,400 pounds of experiments and old equipment for return to NASA.

In the pre-dawn hours of Thursday, the astronauts will use the station's robot arm to release the Dragon. The spacecraft will aim for a splashdown in the Pacific later in the morning, about 500 miles southwest of Los Angeles.

The California-based SpaceX is the first private business to launch a spacecraft to the orbiting complex. NASA wants to use the capsule to restock the station's pantry and eventually ferry station astronauts.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Doc Watson, the blind Grammy-award winning folk musician whose mountain-rooted sound was embraced by generations and whose lightning-fast style of flatpicking influenced guitarists around the world, died Tuesday at a North Carolina hospital, according to a hospital spokeswoman and his manager. He was 89.

Watson died at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where he was hospitalized recently after falling at his home in Deep Gap, in the Blue Ridge Mountains. He underwent abdominal surgery while in the hospital and had been in critical condition for several days.

Arthel "Doc" Watson's mastery of flatpicking helped make the case for the guitar as a lead instrument in the 1950s and 1960s, when it was often considered a backup for the mandolin, fiddle or banjo. His fast playing could intimidate other musicians, even his own grandson, who performed with him.

Richard Watson said in a 2000 interview with The Associated Press that his grandfather's playing had a humbling effect on other musicians.

"Everybody that's picked with you says you intimidate them, and that includes some of the best," Richard Watson told him.

The ever-humble Doc Watson found it hard to believe.

Country and bluegrass singer Ricky Skaggs said Tuesday evening, "An old ancient warrior has gone home."

"He prepared all of us to carry this on," Skaggs added. "He knew he wouldn't last forever. He did his best to carry the old mountain sounds to this generation."

Doc Watson was born March 3, 1923, in Deep Gap, about 100 miles northwest of Charlotte. He lost his eyesight by the age of 1 when he developed an eye infection that was worsened by a congenital vascular disorder, according to a website for Merlefest, the annual musical gathering named for his late son Merle.

He came from a musical family. His father was active in the church choir and played banjo and his mother sang secular and religious songs, according to a statement from Folklore Productions, his management company since 1964.

Doc Watson's father gave him a harmonica as a young child, and by 5 he was playing the banjo, according to the Merlefest website. He learned a few guitar chords while attending the North Carolina Morehead School for the Blind in Raleigh, and his father helped him buy a Stella guitar for $12.

"My real interest in music was the old 78 records and the sound of the music," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the website. "I loved it and began to realize that one of the main sounds on those old records I loved was the guitar."

The wavy-haired Watson got his musical start in 1953, playing electric lead guitar in a country-and-western swing band. His road to fame began in 1960 when Ralph Rinzler, a musician who also managed Bill Monroe, discovered Watson in North Carolina. That led Watson to the Newport Folk Festival in 1963 and his first recording contract a year later. He went on to record 60 albums, and wowed fans ranging from '60s hippies to fans of traditional country and folk music.

According to the Encyclopedia of Country Music, Watson took his nickname at age 19 when someone couldn't pronounce his name and a girl in the audience shouted "Call him Doc!"

Seven of his albums won Grammy awards; his eighth Grammy was a lifetime achievement award in 2004. He also received the National Medal of the Arts from President Bill Clinton in 1997.

"There may not be a serious, committed baby boomer alive who didn't at some point in his or her youth try to spend a few minutes at least trying to learn to pick a guitar like Doc Watson," Clinton said at the time.

Folklore described Watson as "a powerful singer and a tremendously influential picker who virtually invented the art of playing mountain fiddle tunes on the flattop guitar."

Countless guitarists have tried to emulate Watson's renditions of songs such as "Tennessee Stud," ''Shady Grove," and "Deep River Blues."

Doc Watson's son Merle began recording and touring with him in 1964. But Merle Watson died at age 36 in a 1985 tractor accident, sending his father into deep grief and making him consider retirement. Instead, he kept playing and started Merlefest, an annual musical event in Wilkesboro, N.C., that raises money for a community college there and celebrates "traditional plus" music.

"When Merle and I started out we called our music 'traditional plus,' meaning the traditional music of the Appalachian region plus whatever other styles we were in the mood to play," Doc Watson is quoted as saying on the festival's website. "Since the beginning, the people of the college and I have agreed that the music of MerleFest is 'traditional plus.'"

Doc Watson has said that when Merle died, he lost the best friend he would ever have.

He also relied on his wife, Rosa Lee, whom he married in 1947.

"She saw what little good there was in me, and there was little," Watson told the AP in 2000. "I'm awful glad she cared about me, and I'm awful glad she married me."

In a PBS NewsHour interview before a January appearance in Arlington, Va., Watson recalled his father teaching him how to play harmonica to a tune his parents had sung in church, as well as his first bus trip to New York City to perform in the early 1960s. He gave an early solo performance at Gerde's Folk City in Greenwich Village, a hot spot for the folk music revival, and later played Carnegie Hall.

Telling the stories in a folksy manner, he broke into a quiet laugh at various points. He said he still enjoyed touring.

"I love music and love a good audience and still have to make a living," Watson said. "Why would I quit?"

Musician Sam Bush, who has performed at every Merlefest, began touring with Doc and Merle Watson in 1974, occasionally substituting for Merle when he couldn't travel.

"I would sit next to Doc, and I would be influenced by his incredible timing and taste," Bush said after Watson's recent surgery. "He seems to always know what notes to play. They're always the perfect notes. He helped me learn the space between the notes (are) as valuable as the ones you play."

Bush said he was also intimidated when he began playing with the man he calls "the godfather of all flatpickers."

"But Doc puts you at ease about that kind of stuff," Bush said. "I never met a more generous kind of musician. He is more about the musical communication than showing off with hot licks."

His blindness didn't hold him back musically or at home.

Joe Newberry, a musician and spokesman for the N.C. Department of Cultural Resources, remembered once when his wife called the Watson home. Rosa Lee Watson said her husband was on the roof, replacing shingles. His daughter Nancy Watson said her father built the family's utility shed.

Guitarist Pete Huttlinger of Nashville, Tenn., said Doc Watson made every song his own, regardless of its age. "He's one of those lucky guys," said Huttlinger, who studied Watson's methods when he first picked up a guitar. "When he plays something, he puts his stamp on it ? it's Doc Watson."

He changed folk music forever by adapting fiddle tunes to guitar at amazing tempos, Huttlinger said. "And people all over the place were trying to figure out how to do this," he said. "But Doc, he set the bar for everyone. He said, 'This is how it goes.' And people have been trying for years to match that.

"He took it (the guitar) out of the background and brought it up front as a melody instrument. We're no longer at the back of the class. He gave the front to us."

Wayne Martin, executive director of the North Carolina Arts Council, said recently that Watson took southern Appalachian forms of music such as balladry, old-time string music and bluegrass, and made them accessible.

"He takes old music and puts his own creativity on it," Martin said. "It retained its core, yet it felt relevant to people today."

Said Bush: "I don't think anyone personifies what we call Americana more than Doc Watson."

North Carolina Gov. Beverly Perdue said in a statement Tuesday evening that Watson will be missed.

"Over his long and brilliant career, Doc Watson traveled the world playing the music he loved, but his heart never strayed far from his home in Deep Gap, N.C.," Perdue said. "Our state was fortunate to have such a worldwide ambassador of North Carolina's culture and heritage."

In 2011, a life-size statue of Watson was dedicated in Boone, N.C., at the spot where Watson had played decades earlier for tips to support his family, according to the Folklore statement. At Watson's request the inscription read, "Just One of the People."

How To Make Your Long Distance Relationship Last |

By Ron Hubbard

Having a long distance relationship can be interesting. There are two main types of long distance relationships. There are those in a relationship, but they just happen to have to live apart for various reasons after they?ve lived close by each other. The long term goal is to keep the relationship alive and well until they can reunite. Then, there are those couples that live far apart, and they fall in love even though they have distance. These couples have to build on that love and make it work out even though there may be distance for a long time to come. No matter what the case is, if you have an honest, open relationship and can communicate with one another, you can always make long distance relationships work.
Terms

You must establish the terms of your relationship in the beginning. Talk to your partner about what your expectations are and find out what the reality will be. Discuss how and how often you will communicate, and how often you?ll see each other. Decide how you are going to visit each other who will pay for what. Next, make sure you?re on the same page about whether you?re in a monogamous or open relationship.

Communication

Saying I love you can be done in millions of ways, and you should take advantage of this. Text it, phone it, write it, you name it, do it. It might not hurt to get a little sexy either. Also be sure to send gifts ? a box filled with your partner?s favorite sweets or surprises are always an amazing way to keep a relationship alive.

Encouragement

When you and your partner are apart, it?s always good to encourage each other every single day. When you are apart, you don?t get to feel that hug, squeeze of the hand, or goodbye kiss that most couples enjoy. Think of your partner and what they may be going through. Pick up the phone, send an email or just reach out and tell them that you are thinking of them. Wish them good luck on a job interview or congratulate them on a recent promotion. Be as verbal as you can be with your partner and encourage each other all the time.

Keep Busy

Instead of worrying about when your phone will ring, stay busy. This will really benefit your relationship. Do things you enjoy and then share them with your partner when you are reunited. In fact, I suggest throwing yourself into work, hobbies, charity, whatever it is you do when you?re separated, so that when you?re together, it?s that much more special. Furthermore, you can make sure you never have to work while you?re supposed to be spending quality time together!

Being in a long distance couple can seem to be tough, but with good communication skills and some understanding, you can make any distance work!

Samsung's 'human centric' Galaxy S III launches around the globe, says what delays?

Image

Despite carrier and retailer indications of delays for certain editions of Samsung's new Galaxy S III, the company triumphantly announced its launch right on schedule tonight. Of course, here in the US we're sadly on the outside looking in at the launch action going on in 28 countries as a new day dawns for the 29th, but at least there's rumblings that our localized editions aren't far off. In July, its world tour is expected to have swung through 145 countries and 296 carriers. As long as you're looking for a 16GB Marble White quad-core Exynos juggernaut, you should be able to find it right away -- if the machine translated Korean press release is too tough to bear, remember we've got all the launch details (and a review) right here.

Windows XP Costs Microsoft Five Times More To Support Than Windows 7

Microsoft XP Support Costs RisingIn April 2012 Microsoft released a statement in which the tech firm told organizations that if they have not yet began migrating from Windows XP to Windows 7 they should begin immediately or soon lose support for the 13 year old operating system.

In a rather frank statement Microsoft told customers that if they had not started?the migration to a modern PC, you are late.?

Microsoft will completely abandon Windows XP in April 2014 even though 42 percent of Windows? non-home installed base continues to operating using the Windows XP system. Microsoft predicts that 11 percent of Windows users will still be running Windows XP when security patches stop in 2014.

Windows XP will finally be completely orphaned by Microsoft with no further support or patches in April 2014, nearly 13 years after it launched.

According to the report, 42 percent of Windows? non-home installed base continues remains on Windows XP. If current migration trends continue, 11 percent of all Windows users will still be running XP when the security patches stop in 2014.

In a white paper published on the?official Microsoft blog?the company points to a three-year hardware lifetime while pointing out that information technology workers? time and worker productivity costs jump by 25 and 23 percent respectively in year four. When technology reaches year five those costs increase by 29 percent for IT and 40 percent for worker costs. One of the biggest costs appears to be support time losses since workers are typically supporting users with older, slower computers compared to Windows 7 PCs.

In the meantime the new upgrade requirement will cost IT teams as they may need to create new compatible software for badge printers, industrial controllers or security hardware.

I certainly don't mean to hijack the thread, but I do feel I should mention to you that your choice for looking for Windows should be justified by what you're looking to do with the server.

Rule of thumb: Don't use Windows unless your software specifically requires it.

H is not staying at house (separated),, yet he calls and talks to my 23 year old daughter every day..

I know he does this to know what I'm doing, where I am, etc.....

So he texts me tonight and says " I know I said I wouldn't text, but I called Dana on her way to work to see how she was feeling (has been sick),, and I told her " my marriage is over",, and she said "I know"...............No response needed."

So of course my response was " The only thing I'm going to respond with is that it's not right that you are putting her in the middle of this. If you want to know how she is doing,, then ask her and leave it at that, don't talk to her about "our" issues."

So when my daughter called me,, she told me that he actually said " Things aren't getting any better" .. and that's when she said " I know"...

He has a bad habit of changing people's words around,, pizzes me off...

All too familiar with that "game". Only in my case, it's my DS (24, married and new father). DS lives close by, while DD (19) lives with Lieceratops, temporary arrangement hopefully.
Since my disability has been settled, L has been trying, desperately to get the rundown about the figures and such. Is an exercise in futility on his part though. I won't disclose the details to DS for that very resaon. Made it clear to him why I'm not, just to remember "igonrance is bliss" and his dad has a talent for getting things out of people. Therefore L can't get info that DS doesn't have.
I, likewise, have the means to do the same to L. Talk to DD often, but keep convo focused on her, what she's doing, etc. L keeps telling me to keep our business between us, not to involve the kids. But it's evident that HE does NOT practice anything he preaches.

Sounds as if your DD is doing what she oughta. My DS doesn't tell me about those kind of calls, but he tells his wife and eventually I get advised. DS doesn't like being in the middle or possibly upsetting me. Sometimes, I want to just explode at L when I learn these things, but keep quiet as I don't want to further harm DS and DD's fragile relationships with their dad. He's damaging, almost to the brink of destruction, those relationships all by himself. Certainly doesn't need my help.

Oregon Dressage Society News and Announcements ? Chehalem ...

Chehalem Mountain Chapter Report

We?ve been having good turnouts for our monthly meetings, and seem to be getting new members regularly.?

The Bears Above Ground Show was a nice success for the chapter.? The show filled both days, and the chapter made around $3000, which we hope to use for some educational opportunities this year.? Sylvia Kantas has graciously volunteered to secretary the show again in 2013, so we?ve reserved the Yamhill County Fairgrounds in McMinnville for next year.

Because of the difficulty in recruiting volunteers, we?ve decided to make it mandatory next year that all competitors volunteer for 2 hours during the show.? The rider can give us a replacement for themselves, if they have one, but we will require every rider to help at the show.? Based on the number of volunteers and positions to fill, the time could be less than 2 hours, but we feel the need to do it this way.? We will be determining the jobs and times over the next few months, to have a better idea of the exact time needed per rider.

We?ve also discussed adding a Musical Freestyle class to the show.? There may be other changes and additions, but we?re still in the planning phase.

Our April meeting hosted Dr. Rick McMillen discussing teeth and equine dental issues.?? Our May meeting will host barefoot trimmer, Pamela Smith discussing hoof care, hoof issues, and trimming. June will be a regular business meeting, to complete our calendar for the year.

On July 7 we?ll be hosting a Ride-a-Test clinic at Clover Valley Equestrian Center in Newberg.? Suzi Ronning and Estelle Keating will be our instructors for the day.? Additional information and entry form can be found on the ODS web site.

In the May issue of Flying Changes I wrote about our chapter member, Karina Molatore, who was seriously injured in a head on car accident in November.?? We?re still open for suggestions on raising money, to help Karina with lessons at one of the therapeutic riding schools when she?s able to ride again.? She hopes to get back to riding dressage again one day, and we?d like to help her realize that dream.?? It would be great if we could get more than one chapter interested in combining forces, so please let me know, if this is something your chapter would be interested in helping with.

Benefits and Drawbacks of Prepaid Phone Cards - Mobile Cell ...

Certainly, all good and successful businessmen recognize the importance of regular, smooth and open communication. No business strategy will ever be effective if such is not carried out with an open communication. This paradigm highlights the advantage of being prepared with calling cards. Before buying a prepaid phone cards , you should know its advantages and disadvantages. It very important to know a calling card user what are the benefits and drawbacks of calling cards. Top 5 Prepaid Phone Card Benefits: 1) Ultra-low Rates ? prepaid calling cards typically have much lower long distance rates (international and domestic USA) than traditional long distance services (even VOIP). By using a prepaid calling card you can easily save up to 95% on your long distance costs. And there is no need to switch long-distance carriers to receive the competitive rates prepaid calling cards offer. 2) Use With Virtually Any Phone ? You can use calling cards from your home calling, cell calling, or office calling without having to discontinue existing long-distance service. And in most cases, a calling card will offer better per minute rates. 3) Ideal for Travel & Vacation? before you travels for business, or go on vacation within the USA or internationally, be sure to buy a prepaid calling card to take with you. You?ll save on long distance calls made at major airports, many hotels, and your cell calling. Of course, it?s always a good idea to contact your mobile service provider and hotel to make sure they accommodate calling card usage. 4) Accurately Budget for Your Long Distance Costs ? Buy one large denomination, or appropriate number of smaller denomination calling cards to fit your monthly long distance calling needs. Doing this will allow you to accurately pay as you go, which means no more unexpectedly large calling bills at the end of the month. 5) Convenience & Time Saving Features ? some newer prepaid calling cards offer convenient time saving features that make them as easy to use as picking up your home calling and dialing. Look for calling cards that offer Dialing, Recharge, and even Speed Dial. The 4 major disadvantages (or) drawbacks of calling cards: 1) Calling cards include the possibility of scams and fraud. You are extremely susceptible to scams and fraud if anybody else knows at least several digits of your phone card. To make a fraud it?s enough to learn a few digits and you will lose your money. Therefore it?s important to keep the information about your calling card secret. 2) Besides calling card companies may also act as cheater in case they charge you for your phone calls more than they should do 3) Moreover calling card companies sometimes fail to inform their customers about the price of calling cards and calling rates that are charges with. You may find out only after buying a phone card that you have to pay more than you have expected. That?s why it?s important to choose reliable calling cards providers and get to know your calling rates in advance. 4) International Phone cards offer phone calls to all countries of the world but again evaluate how much it will cost you to reach a certain destination. Ask your calling card company whether international calling cards designed for calling to a certain country are available as you can save up to 40 %. Long distance calling cards are usually on offer too but find out what are the calling rates at the calling card company as different calling card companies may charge different calling rates and you may overpay. Spice calling cards are one of the providers for calling cards in London at low prices. They also provide international sim cards, prepaid cards, and phone cards

Car sales may be pulling into slow lane

By Paul A. Eisenstein, The Detroit Bureau

By most accounts, the U.S. auto industry has been one of the major engines of the American economic recovery, with car sales helping to offset slow housing demand and other?indicators of a sluggish economy. But are those other factors now starting to give potential car buyers the jitters?

Even with fuel prices coming down, there are unsettling signs of a slowdown in showroom traffic and dealers' ability?to close sales,?said Art Spinella, lead analyst at CNW Marketing. And so, while May sales should still be up, year-over-year, demand will likely take a tumble compared to April unless dealers can deliver some solid Memorial Day holiday traffic.

    California readies autonomous driving bill

?Some of the steam seems to be coming out of the new-car market? as of midmonth, Spinella said.?While dealers are still seeing showroom traffic, closing rates have fallen sharply, he added.

?People are looking but are hesitant about taking the plunge," he said.

?Based on sales data from roughly midway through May, CNW forecasts overall U.S. new car sales will be up only about 6 percent?from May 2011, one of the smallest increases the industry has seen for quite some time. It's?well below the double-digit pace of 2012 overall, year-to-date.

And the figures might underscore the concerns. Spinella?said manufacturers may be ramping up marketing efforts ? notably including incentives ? to bring shoppers into showrooms and then help dealers close the sale.

CNW?s so-called Jitters Index took a sharp 7 percent?rise over year-ago levels, despite the recent easing of fuel prices.??Food prices, local taxes and federal tax policies that impact family economic decisions ? especially those attached to a long-term finance contract ? have a large share of consumers unwilling to pull the big-purchase trigger,? Spinella said.

What?s telling is that even the used car market appears to weakening, at least a bit.? Demand for previously owned vehicles has been even hotter than the new car market in recent months, in many cases reflecting consumers? financial challenges and difficulties arranging the larger loans for a new model.

Nonetheless, CNW data show that those who do get into a new car, truck or crossover have been paying more. Average transaction prices are up an average 8.74 percent?for 2012, a figure echoed by other recent reports from tracking firms?such as?Edmunds and TrueCar.

One particular concern CNW is tracking is the sharp decline in new car sales to young buyers.? In the late 1990s and early 2000s, they accounted for about 5 percent?of the U.S. market.? That?s now down to barely 2 percent?among 16- to 21-year-olds.

What?s unclear is whether it?s simply the result of high youth unemployment, a growing disinterest in cars, in general among Millennials, or both factors at play.

The winner of 'American Idol' is ...

    By Craig Berman, TODAY.com contributor

    Mario Anzuoni / Reuters

Finalists Phillip Phillips and Jessica Sanchez on the season finale.

?American Idol? voters sure love guys with guitars.?Phillip Phillips continued the dominance of the guys on the show, winning the season 11 title and the million-dollar recording contract that goes with it. The normally laid-back singer was overwhelmed when host Ryan Seacrest announced the results, breaking down midway through his performance of ?Home? and leaving the stage to hug his parents.

It was a rare misstep for the former pawn shop worker from Georgia, who was never announced as one of the lowest vote-getters at any point. Though his voice lacked the power and range of some of the other finalists and he battled health problems throughout the season, he was the most contemporary of the contenders and should have a big seller with that first single.

Jessica Sanchez finished second, continuing an ?Idol? trend. No woman has won the show since Jordin Sparks in season six, and if the folks behind the show want to change that next year, they should probably avoid selecting the same types of singers to compete each season.

The two-hour, seven-minute finale took its time getting to that final envelope, with the decision made by a record 132 million votes. The show used some of those 127 minutes to make fun of the judges (though it largely spared the contestants, except for one early audition montage), and there were the usual live performances featuring selected contestants sharing the stage with music legends.

    Mark Davis / Getty Images

Phillip sang with John Fogerty, breaking out the Creedence Clearwater Revival hits ?Have You Ever Seen the Rain?? and ?Bad Moon Rising.? If the post-"Idol" career doesn?t go as expected for the new champ, he?s got a future in a CCR or Dave Matthews cover band for sure.

Jessica, meanwhile, got original "Dreamgirl" Jennifer Holliday for ?I Am Telling You I?m Not Going.? It was one of the best performances of the season, though sadly for Jessica it came after the votes were already counted.

In addition, Joshua Ledet sang with ?the biggest inspiration of my life,? season three champion Fantasia Barrino, a duet that likely shattered glass throughout the greater Los Angeles area. Skylar Laine got Reba McEntire as her partner, and Hollie Cavanagh sang with Jordin Sparks. ?

For the group numbers, Chaka Khan came onstage with the women, while the legendary Neil Diamond joined the men and thrilled Red Sox fans everywhere by performing ?Sweet Caroline.?

And that?s not all! Viewers saw the first ?Idol? proposal in history, as Diana DeGarmo (season three finalist) said yes to Ace Young (season five seventh-place finisher). There was also a Bee Gees tribute from the ?Idol? guys, and Rihanna performed without a wardrobe malfunction or lyrics that caused the Fox censors to faint with worry. Jane Lynch was also spotted rocking out in the stands to the Chaka Khan set. Maybe there?s a ?Glee? guest appearance in her future.

Other notable moments in the finale:

    • Ford did wind up giving Phillip a car despite his bailing on most of the promotional videos. Also getting new wheels were Jessica, Phillip?s brother-in-law and Jessica?s family friend/music mentor. However, Ford did not pull an Oprah and give everyone in the audience a car.
    • The ?Idol? finalists showed that you can sing the phone book, as Randy Jackson always says, but it?s not exactly something that cries out for an iTunes download.
    • ?Idol? showed that it can indeed survive without J.Lo as a judge, as she was absent for a good portion of the broadcast to get ready for her two-song set.
    • Steven Tyler also took the stage along with Aerosmith for two tunes. Apparently, Randy, who was the only judge not to perform, doesn't have much pull with his former bandmates. Those Journey days must seem like they happened a very long time ago. Oh, wait. They did.

What did you think of the finale show? Which performance was the best? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page!
