Bow Tie Pasta Primavera. Avocado-Pesto on Top.

Tonight's dinner: Bow Tie Pasta Primavera. Avocado-Pesto on Top. So excited about this colorful, inviting bowl. This recipe gave me a taste of spring or sunny summer in a the middle of winter. (Although, I do have to admit that LA has a bright blue sky today...) Lunch or dinner approved.

The Dish. Tender veggie-colored bow tie pasta is tossed with an array of colorful veggies: red bell pepper, bright green broccoli, zesty red onion, lively black olives, sweet crunchy carrots and optional capers too. This creamy melange of pasta and veggies includes a lemon-tahini-pepper dressing to start, then another rich pesto sauce on top, the side or folded in to create ultra-creamy pasta bliss. Serve this dish warm or chilled. Healthy veggies, comfort food pasta and rich delicious pesto all in one very cheerful bowl. Leftovers are amazing too! Get my recipe..

Pasta + Veggies + Sunny Accents & Flavors. I pulled some bow tie pasta from the pantry and instead of slathering those tender, pointy ties in red marinara sauce I decided to go with rainbow-colored dish. Pasta Primavera. This lively blend of veggies includes a lemon-tahini-pepper sauce for the pasta and veggies. Then over top I dollop on some rich avocado walnut pesto made using spinach and walnuts, garlic and avocado, a splash of EVOO and plenty of lemon too.

Dive into this colorful bowl and brighten up any winter day.

This dish is delish served warm or chilled!

Add the creamy pesto over top of old in to serve..

Oil Options!
This is a fun recipe to use creative oils in. I recently received an email from a reader asking how in the world one uses healthy hemp oil. Well this pasta is great! Sub a few Tbsp of the hemp oil in place of the olive oil. You could also try pumpkin seed, walnut or grape seed oils. I don't always go overboard on adding oils to my food, but for pasta I really enjoy a nice drizzle in my pasta and veggies. It really gives everything a nice richness and the oil adds fat which adds to the satiety level of my food which helps you feel satisfied without over-loading your plate with pasta. I find that when my pasta contains oil I eat much less of it than when it is more low-fat or oil free.

Kathy's Pasta Primavera with lemon, pepper, tahini and pesto
vegan, makes 8 cups

Pasta + Veggies:
2 cups dry bow tie pasta (vegan)
1 bell pepper, chopped
1 red onion, chopped
2 medium carrots, sliced or diced
2 ounces black olives, sliced (or kalamata olives)
2 Tbsp capers (optional)
1/4 cup nutritional yeast (optional)

Lemon Pepper Tahini Dressing:
3 lemons, juices + 1/2 tsp lemon zest (organic)
2 tsp maple or agave syrup (optional, adds hint of sweetness)
2-3 Tbsp tahini
3 Tbsp extra virgin olive oil (use more or less according to tastes for richness)
1/4 tsp dried bell pepper
1/4 tsp dried onion or garlic
1/2 tsp fine black pepper
1/2 tsp chili pepper
1/2 tsp salt (to taste)
*all the spices in this dressing are adjustable to taste as well

Avo-Spinach Walnut Pesto:
1/2 cup raw walnuts
1 small avocado
1/3 - 1/2 cup pasta water (or warm water)
1/2 tsp chopped garlic or roasted garlic
1 tbsp extra virgin olive oil
1 cup baby spinach (1 large handful)
1-2 Tbsp nutritional yeast (optional)
salt to taste OR add 2 tsp white miso paste which is naturally salty

Directions:

1. Start out by boiling some salted water on your stove and dropping your bow tie pasta.

2. While your pasta cooks, you can prep all your veggies and mix up your dressing in a side bowl.

3. About 2 minutes before your pasta is tender, drop the broccoli into the boiling water. This will blanch the broccoli to a tender state, but not overcook it. This is also easy because you do not have to cook it separately.

4. Drain your pasta and broccoli and transfer to a large mixing bowl. I like to now add in my nutritional yeast and toss a bit. Also add in your fresh veggies: peppers, onion, carrots. Also fold in the olives and optional capers.

5. Next you want to gently fold in the tahini dressing. Be careful to toss gently so you do not break apart all the bow-ties. After you have tossed the pasta and veggies and dressing do a taste test and salt to taste. You can also add more seasonings and nutritional yeast if you'd like. Cover bowl and allow the flavors to settle and marinate while you prep the pesto.

6. Pesto: Add all the ingredients to a high-speed blender or food processor. Blend until smooth. Taste test and salt to taste. (I love using white miso paste to salt my pesto! Basic salt works too.) As you blend - add more or less water to thin out the blend.

7. You have two options, serve the pasta now slightly warm with the warm pesto OR chill everything. Then you can serve both chilled or serve re-heated pasta with chilled pesto or re-heat both. Both the pasta and pesto taste yummy warm and cold - so you cannot really go wrong here.

Enjoy!

Pair with white wine and some crusty bread on the side.

To Outsource or Not to Outsource Small Business Tasks

small business outsourcingWhen managing a small business, owners are faced with a multitude of decisions, including whether or not to outsource work to save on internal resources. Knowing when and what to outsource can be critical to the success of a small business.

If a business decides it necessary to outsource, the question of where to outsource then comes into play. Some tasks can be handled locally, however, for tasks such as manufacturing and technology, there?s no question that offshore outsourcing would be the least expensive route for small businesses.

Next, business owners must carefully choose an outsourcing service provider. Check out this article from PCWorld that goes into more depth about this topic.

Government war planes bombed opposition-held areas of Syria and President Bashar al-Assad's forces and rebels fought on the outskirts of the capital Damascus on New Year's Day on Tuesday.

A year ago, many diplomats and analysts predicted Assad would leave power in 2012. But despite international pressure and rebel gains, he has proved resilient.

The air force pounded Damascus's eastern suburbs on Tuesday and rebel-held areas of Aleppo, the second city and commercial capital, as well as several rural towns and villages, opposition activists said.

(AP) ? Doctors treating Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton for a blood clot in her head said blood thinners are being used to dissolve the clot and they are confident she will make a full recovery.

Clinton didn't suffer a stroke or neurological damage from the clot that formed after she suffered a concussion during a fainting spell at her home in early December, doctors said in a statement Monday.

Clinton, 65, was admitted to New York-Presbyterian Hospital on Sunday when the clot turned up on a follow-up exam on the concussion, Clinton spokesman Phillipe Reines said.

The clot is located in the vein in the space between the brain and the skull behind the right ear. She will be released once the medication dose for the blood thinners has been established, the doctors said.

In their statement, Dr. Lisa Bardack of the Mount Kisco Medical Group and Dr. Gigi El-Bayoumi of George Washington University said Clinton was making excellent progress and was in good spirits.

Clinton's complication "certainly isn't the most common thing to happen after a concussion" and is one of the few types of blood clots in the skull or head that are treated with blood thinners, said Dr. Larry Goldstein, a neurologist who is director of Duke University's stroke center. He is not involved in Clinton's care.

The area where Clinton's clot developed is "a drainage channel, the equivalent of a big vein inside the skull. It's how the blood gets back to the heart," Goldstein said.

Blood thinners usually are enough to treat the clot and it should have no long-term consequences if her doctors are saying she has suffered no neurological damage from it, Goldstein said.

Clinton returned to the U.S. from a trip to Europe, then fell ill with a stomach virus in early December that left her severely dehydrated and forced her to cancel a trip to North Africa and the Middle East. Until then, she had canceled only two scheduled overseas trips, one to Europe after breaking her elbow in June 2009 and one to Asia after the February 2010 earthquake in Haiti.

Her condition worsened when she fainted, fell and suffered a concussion while at home alone in mid-December as she recovered from the virus. It was announced Dec. 13.

This isn't the first time Clinton has suffered a blood clot. In 1998, midway through her husband's second term as president, Clinton was in New York fundraising for the midterm elections when a swollen right foot led her doctor to diagnose a clot in her knee requiring immediate treatment.

Clinton had planned to step down as secretary of state at the beginning of President Barack Obama's second term. Whether she will return to work before she resigns remained a question.

Democrats are privately if not publicly speculating: How might her illness affect a decision about running for president in 2016?

After decades in politics, Clinton says she plans to spend the next year resting. She has long insisted she had no intention of mounting a second campaign for the White House four years from now. But the door is not entirely closed, and she would almost certainly emerge as the Democrat to beat if she decided to give in to calls by Democratic fans and run again.

Her age ? and thereby health ? would probably be a factor under consideration, given that Clinton would be 69 when sworn in, if she were elected in 2016. That might become even more of an issue in the early jockeying for 2016 if what started as a bad stomach bug becomes a prolonged, public bout with more serious infirmity.

Not that Democrats are willing to talk openly about the political implications of a long illness, choosing to keep any discussions about her condition behind closed doors. Publicly, Democrats reject the notion that a blood clot could hinder her political prospects.

"Some of those concerns could be borderline sexist," said Basil Smikle, a Democratic strategist who worked for Clinton when she was a senator. "Dick Cheney had significant heart problems when he was vice president, and people joked about it. He took the time he needed to get better, and it wasn't a problem."

It isn't uncommon for presidential candidates' health ? and age ? to be an issue. Both in 2000 and 2008, Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., had to rebut concerns he was too old to be commander in chief or that his skin cancer could resurface.

Two decades after Clinton became the first lady, signs of her popularity ? and her political strength ? are ubiquitous.

Obama had barely declared victory in November when Democrats started zealously plugging Clinton as their strongest White House contender four years from now, should she choose to take that leap.

"Wouldn't that be exciting?" House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi declared in December. "I hope she goes. Why wouldn't she?"

Even Republicans concede that were she to run, Clinton would be a force to be reckoned with.

"Trying to win that will be truly the Super Bowl," Newt Gingrich, the former House Speaker and 2012 GOP presidential candidate, said in December. "The Republican Party today is incapable of competing at that level."

Americans admire Clinton more than any other woman in the world, according to a Gallup poll released Monday ? the 17th time in 20 years that Clinton has claimed that title. And a recent ABC News/Washington Post poll found that 57 percent of Americans would support Clinton as a candidate for president in 2016, with just 37 percent opposed. Websites have already cropped up hawking "Clinton 2016" mugs and tote bags.

Beyond talk of future politics, Clinton's three-week absence from the State Department has raised eyebrows among some conservative commentators who questioned the seriousness of her ailment after she canceled planned Dec. 20 testimony before Congress on the deadly attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi, Libya.

Clinton had been due to discuss with lawmakers a scathing report she had commissioned on the attack. It found serious failures of leadership and management in two State Department bureaus were to blame for insufficient security at the facility. Clinton took responsibility for the incident before the report was released, but she was not blamed. Four officials cited in the report have either resigned or been reassigned.

CSN: Lovie's firing made for obvious reasons

December 31, 2012, 9:58 am

Lovie Smith went into the 2012 season in need of a rebound from the franchise disappointment of 2011 that saw a 7-3 start crumble into an 8-8 year. What he and the Bears got was an even more catastrophic collapse, from 7-1 and the No. 2 spot in a playoff lineup to out of the playoffs at 10-6.

?

The result was the end to a nine-year run that included only one trip to a Super Bowl, another to an NFC Championship game and one other to the playoffs and only one year with fewer than seven wins.

?

But evaluations by organizations are based less on the past than on perceptions of where the future is leading. Several reasons lay at the root of the Bears? decision to close the Lovie Smith epoch and go in the proverbial ?another direction:?

?

Simple need for change of direction

?

George McCaskey succeeded brother Michael as chairman of the board prior to the 2011 season. The transition was seamless, orderly and in the natural organizational order. Michael had held the job since the death of his father Ed and he was ready to cede the office while remaining on the board of directors.

?

The course of the 2011 season was such that Jerry Angelo was fired after the collapse from 7-3 to 8-8. Ted Phillips remained as president but the organization was clearly not satisfied with what had occurred on the field. Key in the decision was the conclusion that the Bears were losing ground rather than gaining on the Green Bay Packers and (at the time) Detroit Lions.

?

The season-turning injuries to Jay Cutler and Matt Forte factored into Smith keeping his job, and the blame was assigned to Angelo for failing to sufficiently shore up the roster.

?

Fast forward to 2012 and another two inept performances against Green Bay and one against the Minnesota Vikings, the new upstarts in the NFC.

?

Failures on offense

?

Since Mike Ditka left after 1992, the Bears have had three consecutive coaches from defensive backgrounds: Dave Wannstedt, defensive coordinator in Dallas; Dick Jauron, Jacksonville defensive coordinator, and Smith, coordinator of the St. Louis defense.

?

Smith has been by far the most successful. But even for him the result has been just one losing trip to a Super Bowl, one other to a loss (to Green Bay) in the 2010 NFC Championship game, and a first-round loss in the 2005 divisional round.

?

The biggest single reason was Smith?s problems finding an offensive coordinator, or at least recently one who could co-exist with Cutler. The offense never ranked higher than 15th in yardage in Smith?s tenure.

?

More to the immediate situation, the offense got worse despite the efforts of Phil Emery to supply the wide-receiver firepower that Jay Cutler supposedly needed. Emery mortgaged a piece of the future by giving up two third-round picks for Brandon Marshall and used a second-rounder in 2012 for Alshon Jeffery.

?

Yet the offense degenerated into the Cutler-Marshall show and closed out of town.

?

The revolving college of coordinators on offense accelerated with the 1009 arrival of Cutler ? Ron Turner out after 2009, Mike Martz after 2011, Mike Tice one-and-done in 2012. The franchise?s commitment to Cutler remains to be seen this offseason but in a league that tilts toward facilitating offense, the Smith Bears have failed.

?

Big-game failures

?

Smith achieved a 3-3 record in the postseason. Since the 2006 trip to the Super Bowl he was 1-1, both in the 2010 playoffs.

?

That is a better mark than Mike Ditka in his post-Super Bowl XX time. Ditka was 2-5 with three first-game eliminations and was fired in after a 5-11 meltdown in 1992.

?

But Smith?s time is marred by a handful of bad defeats with the playoffs at stake.

?

The Bears fell to the Houston Texans (7-8 at the time) in the final game of 2008 when a win would have had them in the playoffs. And while the Minnesota Vikings might still have beaten the Green Bay Packers to squeeze past the Bears into the 2012 playoffs, Smith?s team failed to beat a doormat in the Detroit Lions (4-11) when it mattered.

?

The Detroit game mattered because the Bears? defense, Smith?s signature unit, failed to halt two long touchdown drives to lose the Seattle game. That was followed by losses at Minnesota and to Green Bay at home when either would have allowed the Bears to keep control of their own playoff future.

Archaebacteria: The Third Domain of Life Missed by Biologists for Decades

These unusual bacteria are genealogically neither prokaryotes nor eukaryotes. This discovery means there are not two lines of descent of life but three: the archaebacteria, the true bacteria and the eukaryotes

Methanogens, anaerobic bacteria that generate methane from hydrogen and carbon dioxide, make up the largest group of archaebacteria identified so far. Four genera of methanogens that differ widely in size and morphology are seen here in scanning electron micrographs made by Alexander J. B. Zehnder of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology. Shown here is Methanosarcina. The cells are shown enlarged 2,500 diameters. The methanogens are found only in oxygen-free environments. Image: Scientific American

Editor's Note: Microbiologist Carl R. Woese, a recipient of the Crafoord Prize, Leeuwenhoek Medal, and a National Medal of Science, died December 30 at the age of 84. We are making this classic, definitive essay that outlines the evidence for archaebacteria as a domain of life (independent of eukaryotes and true bacteria) free online for the next 14 days. This story was originally published in the June 1981 issue of Scientific American.

Early natural philosophers held that life on the earth is fundamentally dichotomous: all living things are either animals or plants. When microorganisms were discovered, they were di?vided in the same way. The large and motile ones were considered to be ani?mals and the ones that appeared not to move, including the bacteria, were con?sidered to be plants. As understanding of the microscopic world advanced it became apparent that a simple twofold classification would not suffice, and so additional categories were introduced: fungi, protozoa and bacteria. Ultimate?ly, however, a new simplification took hold. It seemed that life might be dichot?omous after all, but at a deeper level, namely in the structure of the living cell. All cells appeared to belong to one or the other of two groups: the eukaryotes, which are cells with a well-formed nucleus, and the prokaryotes, which do not have such a nucleus. Multicellular plants and animals are eukaryotic and so are many unicellular organisms. The only prokaryotes are the bacteria (in?cluding the cyanobacteria, which were formerly called blue-green algae).

In the past few years my colleagues and I have been led to propose a funda?mental revision of this picture. Among the bacteria we have found a group of organisms that do not seem to belong to either of the basic categories. The or?ganisms we have been studying are pro?karyotic in the sense that they do not have a nucleus, and indeed outwardly they look much like ordinary bacteria. In their biochemistry, however, and in the structure of certain large molecules, they are as different from other prokary?otes as they are from eukaryotes. Phylo?genetically they are neither prokaryotes nor eukaryotes. They make up a new "primary kingdom," with a completely different status in the history and the natural order of life.

We have named these organisms ar?chaebacteria. The name reflects an untested conjecture about their evolution?ary status. The phylogenetic evidence suggests that the archaebacteria are at least as old as the other major groups. Moreover, some of the archaebacteria have a form of metabolism that seems particularly well suited to the conditions believed to have prevailed in the early history of life on the earth. Hence it seems possible that the newest group of organisms is actually the oldest.

The evolutionary record

The earth is four and a half billion years old, and on the basis of the macro?scopic fossil record it would appear to have been inhabited for less than a sev?enth of that time: the entire evolutionary progression from the most ancient ma?rine forms to man spans only 600 mil? lion years. The fossil imprints of unicellular organisms too small to be seen with the unaided eye tell a different sto?ry. Microfossils of bacteria in particular are plentiful in sediments of all ages; they have been found in the oldest intact sedimentary rocks known, 3.5-billion? year-old deposits in Australia. Over an enormous expanse of time, during which no higher forms existed, the bac?teria arose and radiated to form a wide variety of types inhabiting a great many ecological niches. This age of microorganisms is the most important period in evolutionary history not only because of its duration but also because of the na?ture of the evolutionary events that took place over those billions of years.

The War Z creator apologises for controversy, aiming to regain confidence of players

The War Z creator Sergey Titov addressed the players through an extensive letter, apologising for the controversy that had surrounded the open-world zombie survival horror since its release on December 17, 2012.

He admitted becoming arrogant and blinded by the early success of the game and therefore chose to ignore the criticism and concerns of the players following the game?s launch on Valve?s digital distribution platform.

Titov took the blame for most of the issues that the players faced upon purchasing and playing the game, conceding that getting 700,000 users in nearly two months made him lose his focus and ignore the community.

"This failure is entirely on my shoulders and if anything I owe thanks to that vocal minority and admit that I should have paid attention sooner. I chose instead to concentrate on the bigger picture: my dream of turning The War Z from being a game developed by a small indie team into a large online venture, instead of addressing small things first and staying focused on the game issues," he explained.

Titov highlighted the wide communication gap between the developer and users, noting that the controversy would not have started had the latter been timely informed about the changes that Hammerpoint Interactive have planned for the game.

The game?s creator said that the studio was relying completely on the administrators and moderators to manage and moderate the community forums, where it was tasked with ensuring that the rules were not being broken and that violators were aptly punished.

He believes the directive should have been to address the concerns and issues and take criticism to constructive discussions.

Titov conceded that a complete overhaul of the company?s community management procedures and rules are in the pipeline, where the main aim would be to increase the presence of development team on forums.

"There wasn?t enough presence of the development team on forums; there wasn?t enough updates on development of upcoming features,? he admitted.

The War Z creator also shared his idea of inviting 10 players from the around the world to the Los Angeles office of Hammerpoint and give them an opportunity to interact with the developers.
