Lopez says late-night hosting days are behind him

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) ? Amid rumors of another "Tonight" show shake-up, comedian George Lopez says he has no desire to return to the late-night talk show scene.

Lopez said he had a great two-year run as a late-night talk show host. But, he said, "I'm out of that thing."

"I know all those guys. They're all good guys, but that's a tough job. There are a lot of tough jobs in TV. That could be one of the toughest, hosting a show every night," Lopez said Wednesday night.

Lopez's comments in Sioux Falls before taking the stage for a stand-up show benefiting the Brennan Rock & Roll Academy come after amid fresh turbulence in the late-night talk show business after word leaked last week that "Late Night" host Jimmy Fallon will unseat Jay Leno as the new host of NBC's "Tonight." The network has not confirmed the rumor.

Lopez wound up losing his cable television gig in August 2011 in a trickle-down effect from the last time the "Tonight" seat changed hands.

TBS canceled "Lopez Tonight" after its second-year viewership dropped 40 percent when Lopez moved his show back an hour to midnight to make room for Conan O'Brien. Lopez gave up his 11 p.m. Eastern slot to accommodate O'Brien, who joined TBS after a time-slot dispute that ended up reinstating Jay Leno as "Tonight" host.

Lopez said he had a great time hosting the TBS show and that the gig gave him the opportunity to get to know everyone in the entertainment field, from actors Helen Mirren and Ben Kingsley to musicians Prince, Janet Jackson and Snoop Dogg.

"I tried to create a party, and we did," he said. "The greatest was getting a harmonic from John Popper and then doing shots with the band, Blues Traveler, in the back."

Lopez joked that he's probably better off that the party ended "just for the fact that I wanted to live a little bit longer."

"We went hard every night," he said. "We did it like the old days. You'd sit around and drink till like 11 and then go home and come back and do it all over again.

Lopez said he's been keeping busy since his show was canceled, voicing parts for "Smurfs 2" and "Rio 2" and working on an "alleged project in TV." He was recently anointed by Bill Cosby to take over as master of ceremonies of the annual Playboy Jazz Festival.

"He called me himself and he said he'd like for me to succeed him, which is a tremendous honor," Lopez said. "And also we had a 40-minute conversation of the dos and don'ts of hosting."

Cosby has been a fixture at the gathering of jazz luminaries since the first festival in 1979. This year's show, scheduled for June 15 and 16 at the Hollywood Bowl, will feature Herbie Hancock, Jeffrey Osborne, Sheila E. and Grace Kelly.

Cosby's tips for Lopez included not letting the musicians into his dressing room. "They won't leave and they'll eat all your food and drink all the drink and smoke all that funny stuff."

Brutal group number may doom one of 'Idol' men

By Craig Berman

?American Idol? had two hours of airtime to fill on Wednesday and just eight singers. That meant that in addition to everyone?s solo, each singer also had a group number to worry about.

Frank Micelotta / FOX

Lazaro Arbos will probably be safe.

That was bad news for the guys on the annual Salute to Detroit episode, appropriate for a season that has been a debacle for their gender. Guys have been voted off in each of the last two week, and tomorrow?s results show might make it a trifecta. Their group number was brutal and then they proceeded to shift the blame around to make it even more obvious that the ?Idol? guys are the J.V. talent understudying for the all-star women on the varsity.

?It?s a beautiful day in Hollywood today,? Nicki Minaj said after watching Lazaro Arbos, Burnell Taylor and Devin Velez butcher ?I Can?t Help Myself.? But that wasn?t the compliment it might sound like. ?That?s what I thought, because I thought I was back in Hollywood week! Get off the stage! Go!? she added.

They did, but not fast enough to avoid tarnishing what had been a decent week.

Lazaro Arbos badly needed a strong performance, and he got what he needed in ?For Once in My Life.? The old swagger was back, and he again looked like a pop star, which is a big step forward from the hot mess of the previous two weeks.

?I don?t know if you completely redeemed yourself, but it was much better than last week,? Randy Jackson said. But Nicki was more effusive, crediting herself for her insistence that Lazaro stop listening to Jimmy Iovine?s criticism. Forget Nicki-Mariah ? it?s Nicki-Jimmy that?s the most entertaining ?Idol? feud in years.

Burnell Taylor impressed the judges with his own solo, and continues to be the beneficiary of Randy Jackson?s worship of All Things Louisiana. Meanwhile, much-maligned Devin Velez got a huge endorsement from Nicki, who raved, ?That was an amazing job tonight. I love every single choice that you made tonight.?

Michael Becker / FOX

Burnell Taylor has a fan in judge Randy Jackson.

So, individually, the guys did fine. ?Together ? ugh.

If any of the women crack the bottom three ? and at least one likely will, given Lazaro?s demonstrated fan support, there are a couple of possibilities.

The obvious choice is Amber Holcomb, a surprise member of the unpopular trio a week ago. ?Her ?Lately? by Stevie Wonder got a standing ovation from all four judges, but it?s also the type of performance that has always tended to impress judges more than viewers.

If she?s in trouble again this week, Nicki has some fashion advice. ?If you wear the pink lipstick, you?ll get more votes,? she said.

It could also be Angie Miller, who got something less than raves for the second week in a row. She was dinged last week for being too theatrical. As if to emphasize that point,? Jimmy told her she didn?t need to enunciate like she was in the musical ?My Fair Lady? -- which caused Angie to point out that she had acted in that play in high school. Accentuating a perceived flaw is rarely a good idea.

Randy called it the first time ever he?d heard her give a pitchy performance, but Keith Urban remained optimistic. ?Your talent is undeniable, and we?ll be seeing you next week,? he said.

The other three women all shone, particularly Janelle Arthur. The judges all told her that Kree Harrison ate her lunch in their duet of ?Like a Prayer, ? but she came up huge with her slowed-down cover of ?You Keep Me Hanging On.? ?

?Janelle at her finest!? ?Mariah yelled.

?I absolutely loved it. I thought it was incredible,? Randy says.

So basically, they liked it.

Candice Glover and Kree Harrison bookended the show, either a smart decision or some lucky randomness.? Both are locks to last until May, and aren?t going anywhere. As for the boys ? well, all bets are off.

Who would you send home? Vote in our poll, and tell us on Facebook.

(AP) ? A private jet apparently experiencing mechanical trouble crashed Sunday in a northern Indiana neighborhood, hitting three homes and killing two people aboard the plane, authorities said.

The Beechcraft Premier I twin-jet had left Tulsa, Okla.'s Riverside Airport and crashed near South Bend Regional Airport, Federal Aviation Administration spokesman Roland Herwig in Oklahoma City said. Two of four people aboard the plane were killed, Herwig said.

It was not clear if anyone on the ground was killed, and Herwig did not have any additional information.

South Bend Memorial Hospital spokeswoman Maggie Scroope said three people injured in the crashed were being treated there; one was in serious condition and two were in fair condition. Scroope did not know if they were on the plane or the ground.

The plane was registered to 7700 Enterprises of Montana LLC in Helena, Mont. The company is owned by Wes Caves and does business as DigiCut Systems in Tulsa, Okla. It makes window film and paint overlay for automobiles.

A woman identifying herself as Caves' wife answered the phone at their home Sunday and said, "I think he's dead," before hanging up.

In South Bend, Assistant Fire Chief John Corthier said everyone on the plane and in the first house struck by the jet had been accounted for four hours after the crash. That wasn't true of the other two houses, Corthier couldn't say how many people they were still trying to track down.

"We absolutely don't know," Corthier said, adding that the presence of jet fuel and structural damage made the scene "very dangerous" for investigators. The aircraft remained lodged in one of the homes late Sunday.

"We have to shore up the house before we can enter the house," he said.

Part of the neighborhood southwest of the airport was evacuated. Buses transported up to 200 people to a nearby shelter, Red Cross volunteer Jackie Lincoln said.

Mike Daigle, executive director of the St. Joseph County Airport Authority, said the jet attempted a landing, went back up and maneuvered south to try another landing, but eight minutes later the airport learned the plane was no longer airborne.

"There was an indication of a mechanical problem," Herwig said.

Stan Klaybor, who lives across the street from the crash scene, said the jet clipped the top of one house, heavily damaged a second, and finally came to rest against a third. Neighbors did not know if a woman living in the most heavily damaged house was home at the time, and a young boy in the third house did not appear to be seriously injured, Klaybor said.

"Her little boy was in the kitchen and he got nicked here," Klaybor said, pointing to his forehead.

His wife, Mary Jane, regularly watches planes approach the airport.

"I was looking out my picture window. The plane's coming, and I go, 'Wait a minute,' and then, boom," she said.

"This one was coming straight at my house. I went, 'Huh?' and then there was a big crash, and all the insulation went flying," she said.

Advice on Home Improvement Costs for Sidewalk and Doors

I recently got two quotes from contractors that seemed very high to me but I know home improvement costs are always more than you think/hope they're going to be... If anyone has any advice on the reasonableness of the estimate or other contractors to look into, please let me know!

$1,100 from Mark Leuzzi and Sons for a new sidewalk (small area, not sure the exact measurements the guy took but I'm estimating about 15'x5' but probably smaller). When I seemed surprised at the cost, he went down to $1,000 then to $900 which at that point I completely lost faith that he was trustworthy.

$1,900 from Guida Doors and Windows for a storm door and a security door (about the same price each). I've heard great things about Guida but also have heard good things about Matus and Doors Unlimited.

Thoughts anyone?

Hollande turns to "good cop, bad cop" for French prison shakeup

By Alexandria Sage

PARIS (Reuters) - She is the darling of France's progressive left and recites poetry in parliament. He cultivates a tough-guy image and boxes to keep fit.

Justice Minister Christiane Taubira and Interior Minister Manuel Valls are the unlikely "good cop, bad cop" team tasked by Socialist President Francois Hollande with pushing through his latest sensitive reform: overhauling France's teeming prisons.

Criminal justice experts agree something must be done to tackle chronic overcrowding that prompted the Council of Europe rights body to describe conditions at one large French jail as "repugnant".

France's 191 prisons - some of them dating back to the Middle Ages - are among the most run-down in Europe. Rats and cockroaches, blocked drains and piles of rubbish are common.

One in ten inmates injects drugs and HIV and suicide rates are four and six times the national averages respectively.

But reforms to be debated in parliament from Tuesday will still expose Hollande to attacks from right-wing critics just as his ratings have hit record lows, weighed down by his failure to stem rising unemployment.

In February he braved marches by hundreds of thousands of conservative French to push a gay marriage bill through the lower house of parliament. That and the prison reform are vital to keeping his left-wing coalition happy as he carries on with deeply unpopular moves to cut France's high public deficit.

But after communications gaffes by his 10-month-old government on everything from taxes to rescuing industrial sites, Hollande can ill afford a new controversy flaring.

That is where the Valls-Taubira double act comes in.

"We are two sides of the same power," said Valls, who last week underlined his tough credentials by sending out riot police to tackle a crime wave in the southern port city Marseilles.

"Christiane Taubira and I are shaping the same policy: to ensure the security of the French and ensure that decisions taken by the law are efficient," Valls told French television.

PRISON LAST RESORT

The reforms are set to reverse a decade of "zero tolerance" crime policy under Nicolas Sarkozy, who made his name as Jacques Chirac's hardline interior minister before becoming president.

Sarkozy's approach contributed to a 34 percent rise in the prison population to nearly 70,000 over the past decade - five times the rate of growth in the overall population. Inmates often sleep on mats on the floor in overcrowded cells.

On Tuesday, parliament will debate a list of suggested reforms aimed at making prison a "last resort" by using fines, probation, treatment and training for less serious crimes.

Taubira's formal prison reform package, which is expected to include at least parts of those proposals, should be presented to parliament in the spring.

A 2009 justice ministry poll made public late last year found 77 percent of the French believed prison policy was not helping to cut crime - suggesting Hollande can count on substantial public support.

But conservatives and France's far-right National Front see a chance to attack Hollande for being soft on crime.

"This is a message of impunity to France's delinquents," said Eric Ciotti, a lawmaker for the conservative UMP party.

Valls' close association with Taubira is intended to counter such attacks. A regular on the evening news with his high-profile dashes to crime scenes, the 50-year-old is regularly named in polls as France's most-liked politician.

His broad appeal is backed up by Taubira's credibility among left-wing campaigners that was boosted by her unflappability during 110 hours of parliamentary debate on the gay marriage bill.

The 61-year-old native of France's overseas region of Guiana in South America won plaudits from friends and foes alike for a 12-day performance in which she quoted poetry, ridiculed conservative deputies and won a rare standing ovation.

Taubira's popularity lifted by eight points this month, a CSA poll found, the only member of Hollande's team to rise.

ATTACKS FROM THE RIGHT

"We incarcerate if it's necessary," Taubira told a March 7 briefing with foreign media. "We're breaking with the custom of the past decade to incarcerate up, down and sideways."

Taubira brushes off charges of leniency and says she will build new prisons to replace France's most squalid jails - a policy also endorsed by the right.

To further offset attacks from the right, the government has already taken steps to harden anti-terror laws and add video surveillance in crime-ridden areas. Valls has promised that serious youth delinquency will not be tolerated.

The Socialist parliamentary majority means the reforms are likely to get through, though a proposal to end mandatory minimum sentences could get watered down.

But Pierre Tournier, research director at France's CNRS think tank, said Taubira was unlikely to risk pushing on for even more radical reforms - such as lifting the ban on marijuana as urged by some on the left - particularly given the government's falling popularity over the struggling economy.

"The left has a big interest in proposing reforms but without waving red flags," Tournier said.

San Diego students pass divestment measure targeting companies that do business with Israeli military

San Diego support
A drawing from a fellow student group in support of the University of California San Diego's divestment measure (Photo: SJP UCSD Facebook)

The student government at the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) overwhelmingly passed a nonbinding resolution last Wednesday that recommended divestment from companies implicated in Israeli rule over the Palestinians. The measure, which passed by a 20-12 margin (with 1 abstention) and was pushed by the Students for Justice in Palestine chapter on campus, followed weeks of spirited debate on the campus. It is the third UC campus to pass a divestment resolution this school year, and was successful despite pressure from elected officials on students to vote against the bill.

The resolution targets companies such as Northrop Grumman, Alliant Techsystems, General Electric, Caterpillar and more. All of those companies, as an SJP press statement put it, produce technology that is ?used by the Israeli Defense Forces to violate the human rights of Palestinians.?

While the move to divest is largely symbolic, as the UC Regents controls the university?s investments, students who supported the resolution say that divestment has the potential to spark a conversation about Palestine on campus and inspire other student groups to resolve to divest as well.

The passage of the resolution was condemned by the Anti-Defamation League-affiliated student Tritons for Israel group. And after the vote, the UCSD administration issued a statement saying that ?the UC leadership has reiterated its decision that such divestment is not the policy of the University of California and that a divestment resolution will not be brought before the Regents.?

The administration statement also said that ?UC San Diego is a renowned university of international stature that provides students and faculty with opportunities to engage in collaborations and programs with leading scholars from around the world, including Israel.? SJP members said that despite the UC leadership?s vow against divestment, they were satisfied that their chancellor had cited the need for ?open, balanced and civil dialogue when discussing highly complex world issues that evoke strong feelings and emotions.?

?We?re elated? at the passage of the resolution, one SJP member at UCSD told Mondoweiss in an interview. A group of students affiliated with SJP, as well as student senators who supported the resolution, spoke to Mondoweiss on the condition of anonymity because of what they say is the potential for personal attacks, employment troubles and wariness of being misrepresented by the media. Despite their elation, members of SJP did say they were disappointed that the resolution they supported was watered down.

The original resolution condemned Israeli ?apartheid? and urged support for ?the indigenous Palestinian people in their struggle against a colonial occupier.? The resolution that eventually passed the Associated Students of UC San Diego student group stripped out references to ?apartheid? and the Palestinian people. The student senators who made those changes did so with the intention of making the resolution less divisive, but SJP members said the amendments ?erased Palestinians? from the discourse.

But at the same time, the SJP group emphasized that the fact that divestment passed meant that ?the conversation has changed.? UCSD had seen attempts to pass divestment fail over the past four years. The student members said despite the fact that divestment had failed in the past, the introduction of resolutions over the years, combined with coalition building, educated people on campus about the issue.

?This is really a conversation starter,? one Associated Students senator told Mondoweiss. SJP members pledged that education on Palestine would intensify on campus as result of the divestment resolution.

The passage of the measure came after three sessions of long debate on Israel/Palestine and divestment. Members of the Israel advocacy group on campus argued that it was divisive and alienated Jewish students. ?The student organizations at UCSD representing the Jewish and Israeli communities strongly condemn the passing of this resolution. This resolution represents a step backwards for our campus, and a step backwards for the Israeli and Palestinian people,? reads a statement put out by Tritons for Israel after the divestment measure succeeded. ?It has created a hostile environment at UCSD and alienates the many Jewish students who feel targeted by it.?

In addition to Tritons for Israel mobilizing against the resolution, Congressional representatives sent letters to the Associated Students president against the divestment measure. According to one student senator, another senator in opposition to the resolution passed out paper copies of the letters from the Congressional representatives during debate on divestment. A senator read out loud from the letters as well during the debate.

To assuage fears about backlash from the vote, the names of the senators who voted for and against the resolution have not been made public, though students Mondoweiss spoke to say that other students on campus can speak to individual senators and find out how they voted. At the end of Wednesday night?s long Associated Students? session, one senator resigned in protest at the passage of the divestment resolution, according to a fellow senator who spoke with Mondoweiss.

Additional tactics to delay the divestment resolution, according to SJP members, included senators introducing two other resolutions the day of the vote. One resolution was a vague measure about ?corporate responsibility? in the conflict, while another concerned the impact of the Israel/Palestine conflict on communities on campus.

Passage of the UC San Diego vote on resolution followed similar resolutions being passed at UC Irvine and UC Riverside. The UC San Diego vote, though, attracted the most attention and the most opposition. ?All social movements start this way, and hopefully we can get the rest of UC student governments to pass similar resolutions,? said an SJP member at UCSD.

The success for divestment at San Diego comes despite the efforts of state legislators to condemn the BDS movement and the student movement targeting Israeli human rights abuses.

?Despite underhanded attacks to derail the movement, and despite everything we had to take, despite so many opportunities for the opposition to shut us down, to see this pass is really amazing,? said one SJP member.

Everything You Want To Know About Internet Marketing | David ...

You can earn significant profits by designing websites with interesting content and placing affiliate ads on those sites for your readers to explore. This article contains several helpful hints on how to create a successful affiliate website.

TIP! As an affiliate marketer, partner yourself with affiliates that offer things that you are actually motivated to sell. This is, pick products or services that you like.

If you are an affiliate seller, try to present products with the same pride you have when you present your own. Your links should be subtle. Take care to convey the message to customers that you are a company ?affiliated? with the merchandise.

Complete a thorough review of referral programs that your affiliates offer. Companies want their businesses to be further promoted, therefore they may offer additional money for referrals. Some companies will offer even greater rewards on referrals, like a certain percentage of the commission. If you are in a growth industry or have done extensive networking in your niche, you might be able to make significant money from referral programs.

TIP! If half your profits come from one affiliate program, you are taking a huge risk. Participate with many different vendors instead of hoping that one product or market will always be sustainable.

Niche markets are a great way to make money with online marketing. Specialty niches tend to be more profitable than broader topics, because customers are forced to come to you if there aren?t many other businesses that offer similar products.

You must remain relevant so that your affiliate marketing efforts are successful. Take the time every few months to look at new programs your affiliates may be offering. There are new tools and approaches being developed all the time. Use these ideas to make your ads more engaging to potential customers.

Web Marketing

Let your visitors know who your affiliates are so that your readers can feel more positive about your intentions. Honesty builds trust with your readers and can help bolster your web marketing efforts. When people understand that your web marketing venture has a purpose and a goal, it will decrease their wariness of the links on your site, increasing the likelihood that they will use the links as intended.

TIP! Be honest about your affiliates and why they are a good fit for your readers. Being honest about your affiliate programs will generate more revenue for your website, because you will have built trust with your customers.

An important tool for successful web marketing is to use a tracking service. It?s possible for affiliates to miscalculate your sales, resulting in a loss of profit for you. Save yourself the disappointment and hassle by finding a trustworthy tracking service and using it constantly. It may cost you a little more upfront, but can really save you money in the long-run.

Don?t draw the conclusion immediately that all 100% commission systems can only be scams. Make sure to read its fine print before rejecting it as a scam. A lot of companies that let you keep 100% commission let you keep the initial profit because they?re going to keep the subscription profits. It may be worth your time to take a good look at this kind of offer, as it may still bring in a lot of money.

Google Plus

You need to build up your Google Plus followers as soon as possible to get the jump on your competition. Use Google Plus in the same way you would other social media. Add your icon or username to Facebook and Twitter pages. If you have quality content, you will easily gain followers.

TIP! These days, it is far more rare to receive lifetime commissions in an affiliate marketing program. The potential rewards are still so great that they should be sought out, though.

When reading affiliate promotion books, apply the knowledge from a few good tips rather than concentrating on too much information. Even after all the time you?ve invested, without compensation, you still run the risk of not turning a profit. If you are procrastinating by reading more and more books, stop and recognize what you are doing! Get a few tips and put them into action.

A good approach to marketing your site might be to offer an online promotion, with prizes and gifts given out. Rewards like this may not only translate into repeat business, but may promote your business by word of mouth referrals.

TIP! Using more than one affiliate program aimed at the same consumers is an excellent way to boost your affiliate marketing efforts. By increasing the number of affiliate sites that you target in your niche, you offer a wider array of links to potential visitors.

As an affiliate marketer, it is important to be aware that joining affiliate promotion programs that pay you strictly based on sales can be risky. If it works it can mean a lot of extra income for you! Before making a final decision, do some research on the affiliate to be sure it fits in with your website.

Backlinks are important for an affiliate marketer but those links should be relevant. It should lead to what the link suggests it is. Deceptive advertising practices are not going to gain you customers or repeat business. While you may think your strategy is smart, it may come across as dishonest with your customers.

TIP! This becomes especially important when your target audience includes the older generation. Not all customers can read smaller fonts.

Sign up with several affiliate promotion communities online to get information and to share tricks of the trade. With an online community to work with, you can all help each other navigate the world of banners, html code, article marketing, and more.

Affiliate marketing provides many reward. There is the financial gain as you build serious profits, but also a great sense of satisfaction that you have created a wonderful asset for yourself. However, you must understand that making money through internet marketing is going to take a serious investment of time to improve your website content. If you can put in the effort, you will see success start to come your way.

George Osborne pledges to protect UK troops from Cyprus bank levy

Mr Osborne described the Cypriot bail-out as an "extraordinary" situation, but he pledged that British armed forces personnel and Government staff serving on the island will be protected from the bank levy.

"It?s a difficult situation for people who live in Cyprus," Mr Osborne told the BBC's Andrew Marr Show.

"For people serving in our military and our government out in Cyprus, we are going to compensate anyone affected by this bank tax - people who are doing their duty for our country in Cyprus will be protected from this Cypriot bank tax."

The decision to impose the one-time levy of 6.75 per cent on all deposits under ?100,000 and 9.9 per cent over that amount, has triggered scorn from Cypriot politicians who condemned it as unfair, bringing in doubt its approval in parliament.

Iditarod dog dies after being buried in snow

AP

Iditarod mushers begin the race with up to 16 dogs, but they typically leave some at checkpoints as their animals tire.

updated 9:48 p.m. ET March 16, 2013

ANCHORAGE, Alaska - A dog left behind at a checkpoint along the route of the Iditarod sled-dog race in Alaska was smothered by windblown snow, in the event's first canine death since 2009, officials said on Saturday.

The fatality broke a safety streak that race supporters had cited as evidence of good care for the animals at the center of the contest.

The dog, a 5-year-old male named Dorado in the team of musher Paige Drobny, was found dead on Friday at Unalakleet, an Inupiat Eskimo village and race checkpoint on the Bering Sea coast.

A necropsy, which is the animal equivalent of an autopsy, determined the cause of death was asphyxiation from being buried in snow in severe wind conditions, race marshal Mark Nordman said.

Iditarod mushers begin the race with up to 16 dogs, but they typically leave some at checkpoints as their animals tire. Most mushers finish with a team of about 10 dogs.

Dorado had been left at Unalakleet and was among a group of dogs set to be flown back to Anchorage, Nordman said. The animals were left outside, with their condition checked at 3 a.m. on Friday, he said.

"Between that time and daylight, drifting snow covered several dogs and Dorado was found to be deceased," Nordman said.

Dorado had been dropped off at Unalakleet because of sore muscles, said Iditarod spokeswoman Erin McLarnon.

Most dogs in the Iditarod are huskies or husky mixes.

Animal rights activists have criticized the Iditarod, saying competitors push the dogs too hard in racing and training and subject the animals to dangerous conditions.

"Our stance on the Iditarod has always been that people who care about dogs should not support the race. It's a cruel spectacle," said Ashley Byrne, campaign specialist for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Iditarod mushers and officials have long defended the race's dog-care record, citing the army of volunteer veterinarians involved each year and the extensive dog health screening conducted before each race.

Sixty-six mushers and their dog teams began the 1,000-mile (1,600-kilometer) Iditarod Trail Sled Dog Race on March 2 in Anchorage. Mitch Seavey won the competition on Tuesday.

Drobny, the competitor whose dog died, reached the Nome finish line on Thursday, in 34th place.

This year's race was marred early on by tragedy. Three people, including a 10-year-old girl, were killed in a March 4 plane crash near Rainy Pass, one of the early race checkpoints. They had been headed to the Native village of Takotna, another checkpoint, to work as race volunteers. (Editing by Alex Dobuzinskis and Xavier Briand)

Elvis DumervilAP

On Friday evening, the Broncos released a statement from executive vice president of football operations John Elway detailing the organization?s version of events that left defensive end Elvis Dumervil without a job ? at least for now ? after the team claimed they didn?t get the necessary documentation for a contract restructuring in time.

Elway?s statement:

?For the last week, Elvis Dumervil?and his agent were aware of our desire to change the financial terms of his contract to ensure he would remain a Denver Bronco. After numerous conversations with both Elvis and his representative, we submitted our final contract proposal to Elvis today at 11 a.m. MDT. Based on our previous discussions, we believed our offer was fair and were hopeful it would resolve this matter.

?Due to the procedural elements that were involved in executing the new proposal, we imposed a 1 p.m. MDT deadline for a decision, one hour before the NFL?s waiver wire at 2 p.m. MDT. Our deadline was clearly communicated to Elvis? representative.

?At 1 p.m. MDT, we were informed by Elvis? representative that he declined our offer. We then prepared Elvis? termination notice to officially file his release with the NFL office.

?At approximately 1:25 p.m. MDT, however, we were informed that Elvis changed his mind and accepted the same contract we proposed nearly two-and-a-half hours earlier. Although we expressed our concern regarding the time constraints, we were assured that the signed documents would be submitted to us before the league?s waiver deadline.

?We did not receive the documents from Elvis by the league?s deadline and were forced to release him shortly before 2 p.m. MDT.

?Due to this situation, there are now salary cap implications associated with this transaction that we must consider with regard to potentially re-signing Elvis. At this moment, we are discussing all of our free-agency options to determine what?s best for the Denver Broncos.?

Marty Magid, Dumervil?s agent, told his side of the story to USA Today?s Mike Garafolo. Magid told USA Today that Denver had changed part of the contract, which was one of the multiple factors that led to the fax coming too late for Denver to execute the deal, the agent said.

Rarely does a deal unspool like this in public fashion, and the outcome is something?PFT?s Mike Florio pins on both sides.

8 Great Reasons to Start Using Pinterest for Your Small Business ...

In the past several months, use of the new social media platform ?Pinterest? has increased exponentially, especially among young, professional age men and women. While the appeal may not seem obvious to those of us who did not grow up with social media, many small businesses are getting greater reach and building deeper relationships with new prospects and clients.

Here are eight reasons to use Pinterest to market your business and online Web presence now.

1. Consumers searching less, discovering more
There has been a dramatic shift in Internet behavior from pointedly searching for products, services or information to a more free-form method of discovering new things. Discovery allows people browsing the Internet to find not only information, but inspiration. Pinterest is riding the wave of this new phenomenon, stepping in before you perform the Web search on Google. Often, it is even before you have thought of paying for a particular product or service. As such, it is a great way to get exposure for your business by creating quality image-heavy content that people can re-pin on their Pinterest boards. In addition, frequent keyword term searches in Google now result in pinterest page URLs by other companies when optimized for SEO correctly.

2. Little interaction needed to build brand awareness
One of the most pressing concerns for any department managing an online brand is the question of ?Do we have the resources (money and labor) to do this right?? Luckily, your involvement with Pinterest can be minimal, and there is extremely low overhead. With a few minutes of regular pinning, categorizing, and tagging a day, there?s little else to worry about. No need to manage commenting or spend a lot of time following and friending others; you simply promote your content in your own time.

3. Connect with your audience visually
Pinterest is almost exclusively a visual medium. It attracts a different type of crowd, as well as behavior, than your standard Weblog. To many people, images and videos have a greater appeal than words, but most information on the Web is rarely delivered through this medium. Think of how many people make their livings as bloggers and podcasters. You can tap into a whole new segment of buyers by building a community around your pinned images. Browsers who are inspired by your account spread the word, giving you more free referrals.

4. Helps connect with people too shy to have their own blog
Many people are simply too shy to have a blog, or don?t care for the work involved of constantly creating content. With Pinterest anyone can have their own online Web presence made up of interesting and inspiring images. People don?t have to actually create their own content, but can express themselves using other found content online. Additionally, this spares you the time and effort of constantly creating fresh content. You can still increase your traffic simply by building relationships with people through unoriginal, re-pinned content.

5. Amplifies original content.
Pinterest is usually best compared to Tumblr, a similar concept, but applied to all forms of Internet content rather than primarily images. The average Tumblr post gets picked up and rerun somewhere else on the Internet nine times. Using Tumblr, it reaches far more people than if it had solely remained on the original content site. It is still too soon to have any definitive metrics from Pinterest, but one would assume the effect will be the same. As your content is re-pinned regularly, your audience grows exponentially.

6. A Re-Pin is the new ReTweet
It is entirely possible to build a community without creating any original content simply by sharing other people?s pins. This is extremely similar to the way Twitter power users were able to build an impressive following by simply retweeting and Tumblr bloggers who have simply reblogged other people?s content.

7. Allows you to find niches
Pinterest allows people to express themselves through a blend of their many disparate interests. This allows you to not only find out about new and different market segments, but see the relationship between differing markets and differing segments. You can further divide your content and offerings into particular segments within your market. For example, a garden store might have a pin board for different gardening tools, flowers, vegetables, and other reader-generated needs in the market.

8. Builds authority.
Even if your business doesn?t necessarily lend itself to Pinterest?s model, you can still use the tool to share experiences and expertise on a particular region, industry or relationship. Again you can build different boards to target particular segments and showcase your knowledge areas. For example, a Web strategist might have boards such as ?Social Networking Tools,? ?Top Pros in the Web Analytics Business,? etc.

Hagel, Karzai seek deal on detainees within 1 week

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The Pentagon says Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel has held new talks with Afghan President Hamid Karzai on a nettlesome disagreement over the stalled transfer of a key detention center to Afghan control.

Pentagon press secretary George Little said Hagel and Karzai discussed the dispute by phone on Saturday. He said they agreed to try to resolve it within one week.

Control of the Parwan Detention Center is a firm Afghan demand, but U.S. officials fear that some of the most threatening detainees would be freed once the U.S. gives up control. Karzai discussed the matter on Wednesday with the top U.S. commander there, Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, with no resolution.

The U.S. was scheduled to hold a ceremony marking the transfer of control last weekend during Hagel's visit to Afghanistan.

Now we can talk: Steaks raise stakes for Taiwan-US trade ties

Taiwanese officials let in US beef this summer after years of wrangling over health concerns. Now, Taiwan is getting what it wants: trade talks.

After years of asking Taiwan that question, the United States finally has an answer.?

The island that was long shy about eating American beef ? nervous about cow bones ground up in hot dogs or imports bearing an agent that some suggested may cause human health problems ? ?allows all of that in now.??And this week it got what it wanted in return: talks on trade liberalization. Those talks resumed behind closed doors on Sunday and Monday in Taipei.

Why the change?

?I think the United States has more leverage and Taiwan doesn?t have much,? says Alex Chiang, professor of diplomacy at National Chengchi University in Taipei. ?Eventually, it has to give into the US demand. We really need free trade agreements with other countries, especially as the US is one of the big trading partners.?

There had been several bans on US beef imports to Taiwan over the years. Imports of US beef with bones were completely shut down, to the chagrin of the US in 2003. Then, partly because of changing science and partly because of the political muscle beef has for the US, bans have been lifted since 2010 little by little. ?

Within months after Taiwan agreed to let in the last critical batch of contested beef in 2012, that with the feed additive ractopamine, US officials agreed to resume talks that could get Taiwan into a regional trade liberalization pact and start negotiations for a two-way free-trade deal.

Those talks, dubbed Trade and Investment Framework Agreement negotiations, were shelved in 2007 as Washington started pointing to where the beef wasn?t.?

The United States is Taiwan?s second-biggest export destination after China while Taiwan is the 11th-largest American trade partner. Taiwan had already imported about $128 million of US beef per year before the most recent ban was lifted this summer.

In mid-2012 an official with Washington?s de facto embassy in Taipei said resolving the beef bans represented Taiwan?s general willingness to seek freer trade with the United States.

?When determining with which markets to move forward, I think Washington wants to first eradicate as many unscientific trade barriers as possible before taking the next step,? says Sean King, senior vice president with the political consulting firm Park Strategies in New York.

US officials had said the once banned beef would not cause health problems in humans ? for Washington, a matter of science.

The talks between Deputy US Trade Representative Demetrio Marantis and Taiwan?s Vice Economics Minister Cho Shih-chao won?t hand any deals to Taiwan this week. But eventually their closed-door talks could lead Taiwan toward a hard-to-get FTA and admission to the Trans-Pacific Partnership, an 11-member free trade agreement being formulated with heavy US influence.

Either breakthrough would keep Taiwan in the same herd as Japan, South Korea, and the rest of Southeast Asia as they all push their exports on the world?s top economy.

Taiwan is a latecomer because political rival and economic bull China asked other countries to avoid talks with the island until Beijing and Taipei signed their own trade pact in 2010.

South Korea signed a free trade agreement with the United States last year, and Japan is in discussion with the United States about joining the Trans-Pacific Partnership. Where else is the beef? In Japan and South Korea.

?I don't think the US requires trading partners to import US beef,? says Wai Ho Leong, regional economist with Barclays Capital in Singapore. ?It however will demand fair treatment of its beef relative to other [meat] producers.?

Reuters suspends editor accused of aiding hackers

Thomson Reuters Corp. suspended with pay a deputy social media editor for Reuters.com who has been indicted on charges he aided members of the Anonymous hacking collective, a company spokesman said on Friday.

Matthew Keys, 26, was indicted on Thursday by a federal grand jury in Sacramento, Calif., on three criminal counts. The alleged events occurred before he joined Thomson Reuters, the indictment indicated.

New York attorney Tor Ekeland said that he has been hired to represent Keys and that his client "maintains his innocence."

Ekeland said that he is assembling a legal team and that Keys "looks forward to contesting these baseless charges."

On Friday, Keys exchanged tweets with some well-wishers on Twitter, telling one of them: "I'm okay."

Thomson Reuters spokesman David Girardin confirmed Keys' suspension on Friday but declined additional comment. Keys did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The indictment accused Keys of giving hackers access to Tribune Co. computer systems in December 2010. A story on the Tribune's Los Angeles Times website was soon altered by one of those hackers, the indictment said.

Court filings said Keys had worked for a Tribune-owned television station in Sacramento, operating its Twitter and Facebook feeds. A Federal Bureau of Investigation agent said in a search warrant application that a former colleague told the agency that Keys had been terminated in October 2010.

Keys joined Reuters in New York in January 2012. As deputy social media editor, he promoted stories through Twitter and other means. He lives in Secaucus, New Jersey, the Justice Department said.

Keys wrote on a personal blog and on a Reuters blog that he had previously obtained access to an elite group of hackers, including one known as Sabu. Sabu, later identified as Hector Xavier Monsegur, became an informant, court records show. Monsegur was publicly identified last year and has pleaded guilty to participating in multiple hacking conspiracies. He is awaiting sentencing.

Ekeland represented alleged AT&T iPad email hacker Andrew Auernheimer, aka "Weev," who was convicted last November on hacking conspiracy and identity fraud charges.

Keys is scheduled to be arraigned on April 12 in Sacramento, according to the court docket.

The case in U.S. District Court, Eastern District of California, is United States of America v. Matthew Keys, 13-82.
