Fake Gamers: The Quest for Authenticity in Faked Pictures of Faked ...

Screen shot 2012-08-06 at 6.43.44 PM

Coming off the conversations we have been having lately on the podcast about booth babes, I thought another pertinent topic is the ?fake gamer of the week? segment found at Kotaku. In this weekly blog, writers find ads and stock photos and write pithy responses mocking all of the things wrong with the photos. Often the ?player? (aka. Model) doesn?t have the game turned on, impossible moves are being depicted, or some ridiculous over the top pose is being struck.

What I find most interesting though, and to be honest not all that surprising, is that many of the ?fake gamers? are women. And they?re mostly sexy women. Let me rephrase that, mostly they?re scantily clad, wearing gauze and high heels, looking like they?re about to make sweet love to an xbox remote. And when they?re not playing the sex symbol, most often women are being cast in the ?supportive girlfriend? role.

The commentary on these are usually very funny and pretty biting (for example the, ?don?t laugh; she just never learned how to sit on a couch? girl). What I think is happening here is a backlash against the industry that uses models instead of gamers to display products. So, in a way, the ?fake gamer? series is fighting against the booth babes of the world by demanding authenticity in their advertisements?or at least in their stock photos. I personally get sick of having the work many people do to help get women to a respected status in the gaming community undermined by having the public face of women be models who doesn?t even game.

But, it might not be as simple as that. If this were a perfect world, then sure, we could demand that our models have some cred before they?re publicly associated with the gaming community. Then we would be able to promote a positive view of women through women who are part of the community. I?m sure many of you, like me after I first had this thought, feel a bit uneasy about this for some reason.

The problem is that regardless of how good looking a male model is, he would not be attacked in the same way these women are. He would not be asked to prove himself worthy of being part of our community. We would be more inclined to either brush it off as ?of course they use models for gaming ads? or we would never even question it. This is indicative of how much of the gaming industry (and technology-dependant or stem-dependant fields in general) often work. Women have to prove their ?cred? before they can even be begrudgingly admitted?and even then, they?re often only admitted if they can fit into some stereotypical role that doesn?t rock the boat too much.

Elaine Low, the author of the recent article ?Confessions of a Sometimes Booth Babe? on Jezebel comments further, shocked at how much hate she gets from people within the gaming community: ?No one rips on Sofia Vergara for starring in Pepsi commercials (what does she know about quality caffeinated soft drinks?!) or complains that the Old Spice Guy is unnecessarily naked (how dare he pander to women with his shirtlessness?!). That companies use sex to reel in eyeballs is a marketing tactic as old as time, ranging from the fashion industry to pharmaceuticals.?? And I get it. She?s right in a lot of ways. But, she?s also wrong in some pretty significant ones.

?

So, taking score so far, we have the following:

Problem:

The primary depiction of female gamers undermines their credibility, decreased respect for female gamers, and often it further solidifies their position as objects of sexual lust to be gazed at.

Kotaku:

Resisting depictions of fake gamer images by creating a weekly blog parodying them. Most commentary is incredibly insightful about how exploitative and ridiculous the photos depicting women are.

The Meta-Problem:

Constantly critiquing some of the only representations we have of women, in this way, only reifies that we have different (unequal, but more importantly, unfair) barriers of entrance into the community for women than for men.

Solution?

As we saw in Low?s article, we may not be correct in assuming that because the model in the picture is holding a vita improperly that she must be an idiot. The author of the above article writes, ?While the bulk of booth babes may be actors and models, some of them are also budding video game developers, graphic designers, and gamers who leap at the chance to attend this media- and trade-only event ? and get paid, no less. Seriously, who wouldn?t want to get paid to attend awesome cons like E3 or Comic-Con? (Snoozefest medical conventions are another story.) Almost none of them are ?beauty-obsessed, frustrated wannabe models who can?t get work.?

Where I differ from Low?s opinion that the antagonism toward the ?booth babe? is unjustified is that I believe we have to take the context of the gaming world into account. I don?t know how the soft drink industry treats female employees, or if the Old Spice guy had to prove that he smelled bad before he could pedal deodorant, but I do believe that the booth babe argument isn?t really about the booth babes. It?s about an industry that systematically, historically and currently, abuses, harasses, attacks, assaults, excludes, devalues, disrespects, and exploits women. Whether it?s a cartoon woman, a booth babe, or a game designer trying to make it, she will likely be subject to one of these. And, so I?m sorry if you read all the way to the end, I don?t have a solution that solves everything. But there is a larger problem that neither the parody artists at Kotaku or the booth babe defenders are acknowledging. That is all.

London Olympics: U.S. beats Canada in OT of women's soccer semifinal

A header from Alex Morgan in overtime stoppage play lifted the U.S. women's soccer team to a 4-3 victory over Cananda on Monday, setting up a matchup?with Japan in Thursday's gold-medal final.
Japan beat the U.S. on penalty kicks last summer in Germany during the World Cup.

In a game that had more counterpunching than most heavyweight title fights, the U.S. rallied from one-goal deficits three times in regulation, overcoming three goals from Canadian captain Christine Sinclair.

Canada hasn't beaten the U.S. since the spring of 2001 but gave the Americans -- the pre-Olympic favorites and the world's top-ranked team -- all they could handle on a cold evening at Old Trafford in Manchester, England.

PHOTOS: Women's Olympic soccer: U.S. vs. Canada

Playing a physical style more common in hockey than soccer, the Canadians pounded the U.S. -- especially forwards Abby Wambach and Morgan -- all game. But if that hurt the Americans it also wore down the Canadians, who gave up three second-half goals.

The U.S., which trailed 1-0 at the half, started its comeback in the 54th minute on a unusual play that ended in a goal for Megan Rapinoe, whose corner kick intended for Rachel Buehler skidded off the grass, between the legs of Canadian defender Lauren Sesselmann and off the knee of goalkeeper Erin McLeod just inside the near post.

That matched a first-half goal from Sinclair. But the tie lasted?only 13 minutes before a long cross found Sinclair again, this time just outside the six-yard box, from where she drove a header off the goal post and into the net.

PHOTOS: 2012 London Olympics | Day 10

Rapinoe punched back?in the 70th minute with a right-footed bullet from the edge of the penalty area that stuck the goal post, ricocheted across the goal line behind McLeod and into the side of the net.

Sinclair then matched that with another perfectly placed header, this off a corner kick in the 73rd minute, giving her a hat trick as well as the tournament scoring lead with six goals.

U.S. goalkeeper Hope Solo?went into the game with a 346-minute scoreless streak but Sinclair shattered that, scoring more goals by herself than France, Colombia, North Korea and New Zealand did combined against the U.S.

Hope's teammates picked her up, though, tying the score?with 10 minutes left in regulation on Wambach's penalty kick.

Referee Christiana Pedersen's decision to award the penalty came after Rapinoe drove a point-blank shot off an indirect free kick into the protective wall in front of Canada's net.

The ball struck defender Marie-Eve Nault, who was twisting out of the way, and Pedersen called her for a hand ball. Wambach?sent her penalty kick along the grass and into the corner of the net to the right of McLeod.

Solo's turn to keep the U.S. in the game came just before the end of regulation when she made a huge save on Sophie Schmidt's shot to preserve the tie.

Wambach nearly won the game at the end of overtime but her header caromed off the crossbar.

Researchers unlock secret of the rare 'twinned rainbow'

ScienceDaily (Aug. 6, 2012) ? Scientists have yet to fully unravel the mysteries of rainbows, but a group of researchers from Disney Research, Z?rich, UC San Diego, Universidad de Zaragoza, and Horley, UK, have used simulations of these natural wonders to unlock the secret to a rare optical phenomenon known as the twinned rainbow.

Unlike the more common double-rainbow, which consists of two separate and concentric rainbow arcs, the elusive twinned rainbow appears as two rainbows arcs that split from a single base rainbow. Sometimes it is even observed in combination with a double rainbow.

It is well-known that rainbows are caused by the interaction of sunlight with small water drops in the atmosphere; however, even though the study of rainbows can be traced back more than 2,000 years to the days of Aristotle, their complete and often complex behavior has not been fully understood until now.

"Everyone has seen rainbows, even double-rainbows, and they continue to fascinate the scientific community," said Dr. Wojciech Jarosz, co-author of the paper and Research Scientist at Disney Research, Z?rich. "Sometimes, when the conditions are just right, we can observe extremely exotic rainbows, such as a twinned rainbow. Until now, no one has really known why such rainbows occur."

Jarosz and the international team of researchers studied virtual rainbows in simulation, considering the physical shape of water drops, and their complex interactions with both the particle and wave-nature of light. The key to the twinned rainbow mystery, Jarosz said, is the combination of different sizes of water drops falling from the sky.

"Previous simulations have assumed that raindrops are spherical. While this can easily explain the rainbow and even the double rainbow, it cannot explain the twinned rainbow," he said. Real raindrops flatten as they fall, due to air resistance, and this flattening is more prominent in larger water drops. Such large drops end up resembling the shape of hamburgers, and are therefore called "burgeroids."

"Sometimes two rain showers combine," Jarosz said. "When the two are composed of different sized raindrops, each set of raindrops produces slightly deformed rainbows, which combine to form the elusive twinned rainbow." The team developed software able to reproduce these conditions in simulation and the results matched, for the first time, twinned rainbows seen in photographs. The team also simulated a vast array of other rainbows matching photographs.

The team's discovery was unintentional. "Initially the goal was to better depict rainbows for animated movies and video games and we thought rainbows were pretty well understood," said Jarosz. "Along the way we discovered that science and current simulation methods simply could not explain some types of rainbows. This mystery really fueled our investigations." The researchers now see potentially wider application of their method beyond computer graphics, speculating that, some day, accurate rendering models of atmospheric phenomena, like the one they developed, could have impact in areas such as meteorology for deducing the size of water drops from videos or photographs.

U.S. tops Canada in soccer semifinal thriller, 4-3

Led by Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, the United States Women beat Canada 4-3 in extra time to advance to the women's soccer gold medal match.

United States vs Canada, Women's Semifinal

MANCHESTER, England (AP) ? The U.S. women's soccer team is back in the Olympic gold medal match after a wild come-from-behind 4-3 win over Canada with a goal in the final minute of extra time.

Now the Americans will be out to avenge one of the most gut-wrenching losses in the program's history.

Alex Morgan gave the U.S. its first lead of the night in the third minute of injury time Monday, completing the win over Canada in the Olympic semifinals at Old Trafford.

Morgan's 6-yard header, on a long cross from Heather O'Reilly, looped high into the net over goalkeeper Erin McLeod for the winning goal. Megan Rapinoe scored in the 54th and 70th minutes, and Abby Wambach in the 80th for the U.S.

The Americans overcame a hat trick from Christine Sinclair, who scored in the 22nd, 67th and 73rd minutes for Canada.

Next comes the game the U.S. players have been eyeing for more than a year, a rematch with Japan on Thursday at Wembley Stadium with gold on the line. The top-ranked Americans lost to Japan on penalty kicks in the World Cup final last summer, a stunning blow that became a source of motivation as the players prepared for this year's Olympics.

The U.S. team has played in the title match in every Summer Games since women's soccer was introduced in Atlanta in 1996, winning the gold in 1996, 2004 and 2008 and the silver in 2000.

The Americans advanced by continuing its dominance of the neighbor to the north, extending its unbeaten streak against Canada to 27 games (23-0-4). The Americans lead the all-time series 44-3-5, the last loss coming at the Algarve Cup in 2001.

But it wasn't easy. Sinclair was an imposing force, scoring her 141st, 142nd and 143rd goals in international play. She's now even with Wambach for No. 2 on the all-time list, both chasing Mia Hamm's world record of 158.

Canada coach John Herdman said before the game that the run of futility against the Americans was on the minds of his players, and he addressed it with them in the run-up to the match. He also injected some pregame intrigue by accusing the Americans of using "highly illegal," overly physical tactics on free kicks and corner kicks.

Certainly, his team gave one of its most spirited efforts on the biggest stage ever for a game between the neighboring rivals, scoring the most goals the U.S. has allowed since a 5-4 win by the Americans over Australia in May 2008.

The game included a pair of goals resulting from moments rarely seen in soccer, including a corner kick that curled in for a goal and a goalkeeper whistled for holding the ball too long.

The Americans dominated possession in the early minutes, but then the U.S. defense did the unexplainable ? it lost track of one of the top goal-scorers of all time.

Marie-Eve Nault played a ball ahead to Melissa Tancredi, who tapped a pass over to Sinclair. Sinclair then slalomed through the penalty area, maneuvering around defender Kelley O'Hara to beat goalkeeper Hope Solo with simple right-footer from 10 yards.

It was the first goal allowed by the U.S. in more the 360 minutes, since a pair of early scores by France in the Olympic opener two weeks ago. The U.S. also trailed at halftime for the first time in this tournament.

The Americans found an unconventional way to pull even early in the second half, with Rapinoe scoring directly on a corner kick. She curled the ball just inside the near post, glancing off the legs of defender Lauren Sesselmann and goalkeeper McLeod as it settled in the net.

Then came a wild sequence of three goals in six minutes. The Tancredi-Sinclair combo worked again, with Sinclair heading Tancredi's cross just inside the post from 10 yards to put Canada ahead 2-1. Three minutes later, Rapinoe got her second, launching a right-footer from the edge of the area and off the post.

Then it was Tancredi again, leaping high to head in a corner kick, again just inside the post for goal No. 143, moving her temporarily ahead of Wambach.

Wambach got even with Sinclair ? and tied the game ? with a penalty kick resulting from an unusual call: McLeod was whistled for holding the ball more than six seconds, giving the Americans an indirect free kick inside the area. Rapinoe took the kick, and it glanced off the arm of Nault. The referee awarded the spot kick, which Wambach converted off the left post in the 80th minute.

The game became a battle of attrition in extra time, with the Americans having the better of the chances. Wambach put a header off the crossbar in the 119th minute. The officials then declared there would be three minutes of injury time, just enough for Morgan to put one in and avoid the penalty kick shootout.

Alex Morgan scores on an extra-time header in the 123rd minute as the United States defeats Canada 4-3 and advances to the gold medal match.

Bootstrapping a Retail Business | Hostel 333

Starting a business is constantly less complicated once you have some funding, and far also a lot of company advisors will inform you to wait till you?ve a substantial level of capital just before launching. But what should you just can?t raise the income? Then it really is time to ignore the suggestions of those advisors and jump into the fray.
Clearly, if there is no funding, and you wish to bankroll your new retail company out of one?s personal poorly-funded back pocket, you?ll have to seriously re-evaluate your idea. Notice, we?re saying ?re-evaluate, not abandon. Actually, it is nevertheless achievable to start a retail enterprise with no getting to shell out huge funds for retail space, inventory and advertising. It really is not an easy thing to get funding for a retail shop, specially one particular that is certainly brand new. Expansion capital is really a tiny less difficult to come by, if you already have a shop that is creating income, but if you have got your eyes on running a brand new boutique, these funding dollars will be scarce. Concerning the only way you are going to be able to convince a finance business or bank to provide you income to start a brand new retail shop is in case you are willing to place up the equity inside your home as collateral against the loan.

And yes, in case you have equity, you should count on to possess to complete this. Butwhat in regards to the rest of us poor folks who don?t have any assets, no savings to speak of, and cannot get a signature loan? Are we doomed to a life of wage slavery? No. We just have to start off out small, so tiny that our new enterprise wouldn?t even show up within the radar of what most of the people call a tiny company. What we?re speaking about here can be a ?micro businessone that will be began with very small or no up-front capital.

Standard organization wisdom calls to get a company strategy that particulars your spending for the very first year, and exactly where that income will come from. Your original goal may have been to open up a modest shop in the mallbut rents in most malls even for a little shop frequently go for thousands of dollars a month. A bootstrap retail company is 1 that is certainly starting with either no, or quite small funding, so that space within the mall is out in the question.

Clearly, your 1st concern is inventory, and without having funding, you won?t have the ability to carry quite considerably of it. Contemplate what you envision promoting, and lessen those products to consist of only these that have the highest margin as well as the quickest potential turnaround. Starting off specializing inside a dozen or so products that sell briskly will prime the pump so you are able to add far more inventory later.

As for retail space, although the mall is out, have a look at other regions that may possibly offer you less expensive rent, even when the space is actually a lot smaller than what you had in thoughts. There could possibly be an existing company that will be complementary to yours, with some space to spare?there?s a possibility there of producing a deal. And barring that, commence out without having any permanent retail space at all. Many successful retail shops started out out promoting exclusively at nearby festivals, farmers? markets, flea markets and specialty shows, where you rent space by the day or week. Whilst you are selling at these venues, collect a consumer mailing list so you?ll be able to send your finest clients a card whenever you are capable to lastly move into a permanent retail space.

Most importantlydon?t assume that you simply cannot go into organization just because you don?t possess a large amount of cash.
