In what can best be described as an extremely bizarre announcement, the Republican nominee for the Iowa Senate in District 34 ended her campaign, but claimed she has accepted the position of ?U.S. Senator in the Republic of the United States of America?. Randi Shannon released a four-page letter, attempting to explain her reasoning.
Shannon was set to challenge Democrat incumbent Liz Mathis for the seat that covers portions of Linn County. Mathis, a former Cedar Rapids television anchor, won a special election for the seat last year. Here is a portion of Shannon?s letter:
?Let me now announce to everyone in Iowa, I have become aware of the existence of the Original Republic?for The United States of America.?We the People? re-inhabited our lawful de jure (de jur- ?by right of?lawful establishment?) government on March 30th, 2010. This is The Republic founded in 1787 and then?abandoned during The Civil War in the 1860s.
It was then replaced in 1871 by the UNITED STATES CORPORATION. (de facto-without law). This?Unlawful Corporate Democracy, established by the forty-first congress, has been acting as though it is the??official government? which clearly it is not!

And Remember This! Where the de jure Republic of The United States of America exists the de facto?UNITED STATES CORPORATION, having no standing, must go away!?Now, knowing this, and with the best interests of The People of Iowa District 34 uppermost in my heart?and out of respect for my own conscience, I am here to announce that I am ending my campaign as of this?July 4th, 2012. Trust me this story does not end here nor does my commitment. In fact, my level of service?to the good people of Iowa who have been so supportive of me and my campaign will be greatly increased.?Please allow me to continue, because I have some great news to share with all of you!

Therefore, in order to affect the most good on behalf of The People of Iowa?s 34th District and in keeping with my conscience, I have accepted the position of U.S. Senator in The Republic of The United States of America, where I may better serve You and All of The People of Iowa. I want you to know I have taken an Oath to Uphold, Support and Defend The Constitution of The United States of America. This I will do to the best of my ability, So Help Me God.
Shannon?s resignation from the campaign will become official by Monday. She is part of a group of ?liberty? candidates who were recruited to run for the legislature this year. Shannon thanked her fellow Ron Paul supporters, ?Liberty? members, and others for assisting her campaign. The Liberty Iowa PAC, which endorsed her, did not have a statement available at the time this article was written. To say Shannon?s announcement has left many in the Republican Party befuddled would be a huge understatement.
?She made her decision for personal reasons,? said Don McDowell, spokesman for the Senate Republican leadership. ?Obviously, a lot of people have been reading about those personal reasons. The Linn County Republicans will host a nominating convention in the next couple of weeks and pick a replacement.?
Senate District 34 leans slightly Republican, and its two House representatives, Speaker Kraig Paulsen and Rep. Nick Wagner, are both Republicans. However, Mathis is a difficult opponent due to her strong name recognition.
?Liz Mathis now has a record,? McDowell said. ?She voted against property tax relief, she voted against government reform measures, she voted against numerous Senate Republican amendments on education reform, she voted for all of Gronstal?s budgets that included way too much spending. She continues to stand in the way of Iowans getting to vote on the marriage amendment. We saw her true colors this year. She turned out to be one the most liberal members of their caucus.?
Republicans have until the middle of August to select someone to challenge Mathis. McDowell adds that Republicans are still on pace to capture the majority in the senate and ?there are a lot of avenues to get there?.
