Darren Lehmann, the Australian coach, is devastated with his team?s performance in the first innings of the second Ashes Test at the Lord?s and feels that the shot selection was poor.
Having bowled England out for 361 runs in their first innings, the Aussies were off to a stable start through Shane Watson and Chris Rogers, who accumulated 42 runs for the opening stand. However, after Watson?s dismissal, Australia?s batting line-up fell like a house of cards and the whole team was dismissed for merely 128 runs in the 54th over of their innings.
Graeme Swann, the off-spinner, was the pick of the bowlers for the home team as he grabbed five wickets after conceding just 44 runs.
The former Australian cricketer has admitted that his team failed to learn from their mistakes of the first innings of the first Test at Trent Bridge. ?
"The top order failed again and we need to make sure we're learning from our mistakes and probably haven't done that from the first innings at Notts to the first innings here," Lehmann said. "We showed glimpses but we've got to bat better.?
Lehmann was extremely critical of the shot selection of his batsmen and feels that they did not play according to the requirements of the longer format of the sport. However, the former middle-order batsman hopes that his team will enhance their game with the passage of time.
?It was more one-day batting than Test match batting. We know we have to improve our batting over periods of time and bat a lot more than 55 overs. We believe the plans are right. Our shot selection was poor today. Simple as that. I think eight out of the 10 were self-inflicted to be perfectly honest," he added.
Taking into account England?s ascendancy in the Lord?s Test, it seems highly unlikely that Australia would be able to stop the home team?s charge. However, the sporting analysts believe that the Baggy Greens can restore some pride by performing well with the bat in the second innings.
Watson remained Australia?s top-scorer in the first innings with 30 runs.
