Recipe: Coconut Oil Facial Cleansing

Coconut Oil Cleansing

If you google ?oil cleansing,? you?ll soon find out that this method of facial cleansing is not new. It may sound completely wrong (putting oil on your face to clean off the oil? What?!) but I assure you, you?ll be amazed! As I?ve said it before, I LOVE coconut oil.

I continue to discover new ways to use it and I continue to be amazed at all of the ways I can incorporate it into my life. Just image all of the extra space you?ll have in your drawers and medicine cabinets just by swapping out products and using coconut oil instead!

Okay, back to washing your face with oil. Did you know that oil cleansing will actually pull out all of the toxins sitting below the surface of your skin? Since coconut oil is antimicrobial and contains anti-toxin properties, it will purge your pores rather than clog them! Yes, this does mean that you may temporarily experience some breakouts- but what you see happening on the surface is actually the oil doing its job and pushing the build up that was sitting below the surface (waiting to become a blemish) out!

This phase of the process usually happens in the first few days to weeks (and doesn?t last long!) so stick with it and you?ll be amazed at the way your skin starts to look!

Another awesome detail about oil cleansing- it?s great for acne prone skin. I know, that sounds completely crazy since acne prone skin is typically already oily- which leads to breakouts- but cleansing with coconut oil opens the pores, releases the built-up toxins, and prevents the accumulation of new oils, toxins, and dirt. So once you get through the detox period, acne prone skin will begin to look wonderful.

With this method of cleansing, a great feature is that you can blend in essential oils to customize your oil cleanser to suit your specific needs. By choosing essential oils that calm inflammation, contain antibacterial elements, or rejuvenate aging skin- you can create the perfect blend to maximize your results.

Here?s a basic recipe for oil cleansing to get you started. Mix and match essential oils, try a few different combinations, and make your perfect cleanser!

Ingredients

1 1/2 Cups Extra Virgin Organic Coconut Oil
1 Tablespoon Extra Virgin Olive Oil
Essential Oils of your choice (use about 3 drops each of the oils you decide to use)

Some essential oil recommendations:
Lavender
Frankincense
Melaleuca (Tea Tree)
Ylang Ylang
Geranium

With the coconut softened, use a hand mixer to whip together the coconut, olive, and essential oils into a smooth, creamy consistency. Store in an air-tight container and use with hot water to cleanse your face daily!

Using hot water (not scalding, of course, just hotter than warm water) will help to steam the oil into the pores. Smooth the oil cleanser over your face and neck, hold a hot washcloth over your skin to steam in the oils, and then rinse off!

You?ll be amazed at what oil cleansing will do for your skin! Do you oil cleanse already? What essential oils do you use in your custom blend?

We?d LOVE to know!
