F.P. Report
PESHAWAR:?The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Governor, Barrister Masood Kausar has stressed the need to give top most priority to enhance agricultural productivity, which he added, is an open challenge to both agriculturists and the scientists who indeed have the capacity to do so. Referring to vastly available waste land in the country, the Governor added, ?it is unfortunate, the nation confronts food shortage off and on despite having sufficient resources available to meet the requirements?.
Addressing the Convocation ? 2012 of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Agroicultural University at its premises in Peshawar on Saturday, the Governor said, ?it is indeed highly encouraging that our young scientists in the field are imbued with spirit and capabilities to overcome the confronting challenges?.
In all more than 1000 graduates, 30 got PhD; 300 masters and more than 700 achieved bachelor degrees in various disciplines of agriculture sciences including Business Administration, Computer Science, Veter?inary Science, Information Technology, Bio-Technology and Rural Sociology as well while amongst them, 46 were honoured with gold medals and thirty each got silver and bronze medals for achieving distinctive positions in their respective fields.
The Governor, who is also the Chancellor of the university said that the instable state of supply in the back drop of increasing poverty level is linked to price volatility at the international level and keeping in view the. high food prices coupled with significant increase in farm inputs have put agricultural growth and food production issues back on the development agenda.
Therefore, he added, the productivity growth is considered the only way to address both the short-term challenges and the long-term needs by various nations.
In our country too, the Governor said, agriculture is an engine of growth for generating employment opportunities for the non-farm economy as well because of its linkages with small cities and rural areas.
?The rural and community-driven development can assist in making this process more fruitful. The private sector is the investor and a supplier of services in this field while donors, NGOs and Civil Society Organizations are the beneficiaries when implementing projects and to identify the right mix of these actors and to establish an effective cooperation among them is no doubt a complex task?, he remarked.
Highlighting the importance of agricultural education, the Governor said, only good institutions produce good experts for the field and fortunately, there exists tremendous realization at every level that universities are the institutions which can develop skills to cope up with these challenges.
With this fact in mind, he added, the role of this university is gradually expanded of which the Mardan campus has already become fully functional while the Rainfed Campus for Agriculture at Lakki Marwat have been approved.
He also desired to give due focus to provide vocational training to farmers, workers in small-scale rural enterprises, traders and entrepreneurs and to strengthen the agricultural institutions in other parts of the province, which, he said is must to produce better research and extension manpower.
Provision of high quality education, research and dissemination of research findings to indigenous holders is the key towards achievement of the desired goals and the university should not remain content to maintain the statusquo rather continue the struggle to further improve its merit both at the national and international level.
Congratulating the graduates, the Governor advised them that sky should be the limit for them, if they dream high and act with determination and conviction and they will also get the reward. ?Remember, reward or recognition never comes, if you work aiming to get that but it follows, if you work with devotion and without even thinking for that?, he said.
Prof. Dr. Khan Bahadur Marvat, Vice Chancellor of the University earlier presenting the annual report of the university said that their university with 160 PhD faculty; 85 research projects; stands top in the province and second in the entire country.
The scholars of the university, he added, have gained 138 US and 32 JAICA sponsored scholarships purely on merit basis recently, besides 137 scholarships offered by Diya Foundation from within the country.
The university, he added, is also going to provide financial support to the tune of Rs.three million to its students. He also thanked the Governor for gracing the occasion, despite his heavy schedule of engagements. The ceremony was largely attended by educationists, scholars and parents of the graduates.
